Description ~ Merwyn ~


Enrollment piece for Merwyn. Merwyn staring at constellations in the night sky is one of the images that I obsessively draw, so here it is in colour!

I can't say much more about her for now (for the sake of the Guess Who task, of course ) other than she is Aidan's mother, another character I enrolled in OCT a few rounds ago.

I'm planning to write a story with her as protagonist, so I'm hoping OCT will help. It did wonders for my novella with Eyolf , whom I developed during the training - you can read the story here: Lucky Wolf .Β

This is my absolute favorite piece of your Elements series. Merwyn is beautiful. She does not look like she belongs on the ground, her feet rooted - she looks like she wants to do nothing but to ascend to the skies. Her eyes staring upwards, her lips upturned, her hair blowing around her like the wind itself taken shape. I also utterly love how the background and the illuminated drops both resemble the backgrounds of Aedgar's piece as well as Aidan's piece. The circle around her head is almost like a dark aureole, and the stipled shapes make it into something more raw, something spiritual more than anything else. Truly, a stunning piece.

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment Gosh, you describe her so well and so beautifully, I'm happy you see all that in the painting!Β  Β I did intend it to be a sort of a counterpart for Aidan's and Aedgar's (though I apparently managed to make all of my Elements series on a dark background so far perhaps because I started with the somber/gloomy ones no worries, once Eyolf, Hakon and Helgi come into the picture it will be all sunshine and colour )

She's beautiful and I love the celestial art around this portrait. Also, I love her name! "Merwyn" sounds Welsh but I know the Welsh Merlin is "Myrddin" and Morgan is "Moryen" so how do you pronounce "Merwyn" and where does it come from? Also, does it have an Anglican equivalent?

Thank you very much It is an Anglo-Saxon name and it means something like "sublime rapture". It would've been spelled Mærwynn but I didn't want too weird spellings for my characters' names, so I tend to anglicize them a bit. I read about a 10th century English noblewoman who became abbess and was canonized called Mærwynn and I thought it sounded very appropriate for my character

Hmm somewhere on the internet,Β I think, I was reading about English monasticism in the Middle Ages (since the protagonist of my novel -her son- is a monk).
