Description Creatures from an alternative universe/ extraterrestrial generational ship crash into ours and everything turns out okay (for most of us, at least). Unlike, say, in a Steven King novel where they are EVIL MONSTERS of EVILNESS wanting to EAT YOUR SOUL.

This came from a doodle because I needed a break from robots. (download for full size).

Wonderful! The attention to detail is exquisite and I can't wait to see other conceptual pieces set in this world. (And I appreciate the "they aren't evil invaders" note too.)

Both the kappasquid and the crashed starfish are brilliant concepts, and you rule.

Absolutely stunning! I saw this through Bio-Fantasy. Man, if the rest of your gallery is even half as good as this piece, you're my best find in Deviantart in weeks!

Brilliant design and exquisite rendering. The backstory is very interesting as well.

Now, on to the rest of your gallery. Oh boy!

I just imagined a tank full of these things and am not quite sure whether to glee or feel scared.

... Both?

I loved the mish-mash of animal features but you still manage to keep them from being too familiar. It's like seeing something I feel like I should recognize but don't at the same time.

thanks! With their "hands" I imagined they would act like underwater raccoons, feeling under rocks and sand for treats.

The most awesome thing I've seen today. It reminds me a little of Specworld's megasquids. [link]

*Clicks link, is deluged with pop-ups*

Thanks! I was so happy when I found that site (though, I don't remember so many pop-ups). The megasquids are a great addition to Specworld, as interesting, if not more-so than the myriad of dinosaurs.

Also, I am pretty sure they put the fins-on-squid's-mantle meme in my head.

Oh man, I love it! Everything about it--the concept, the execution...I'm digging that ethereal white-pencil-highlight quality of the drawing itself, it produces a really naturalistic effect and does a great job highlighting all the creases and wrinkles and curves.

My first impression on seeing this was "penguin/turtle!," which totally freaked me out because I had a flash for a penguin/turtle creature last night...I guess I better get on it before all the good penguin/turtles are taken.

It does seem like a natural pairing in some regards...I was always partial to the "Sunners" from Riven ([link] ).
Here's the little guy who inspired my own turtle/penguin flash...It was the orange patch on the black body that did it!

gruffin In reply to thomastapir [2010-03-05 08:18:19 +0000 UTC]

With their beak, turtle heads seem less reptilian and more birdlike. And then, penguins have short stiff feathers that look like scales. Halfway point hybrid!

thomastapir In reply to gruffin [2010-03-05 22:46:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh!, that reminds me, have you ever seen Michael Zulli's take on the (Teenage Mutant Ninja) Turtles?
[link]

I love it, he makes them look much more reptilian and also, as you say, somewhat avian.

gruffin In reply to thomastapir [2010-03-06 09:02:16 +0000 UTC]

Haha! It seems many people have alternative takes on TMNT. These are the first I saw on teh internets:
[link]

But here, they are more Sea Turtle-y (and anime, but thats another bag of worms)

thomastapir In reply to gruffin [2010-03-06 19:24:53 +0000 UTC]

Whoa, those are cool! I like the way they have more traditional (and distinctive) costumes. I've seen some pretty original Turtle takes on dA as well...[link] for example. Kinda reminds me of the Zulli version a bit.
