Description This is a scene that I made just for the fun of it. I'm not completely happy the way it turned out, but oh well. Available on blendswap.

Made in Blender.

Oh wow.

I almost thought it looked real!

It's all fantastic but out of everything their the rubber is the one that gave it away the most!

All in all though it's a brilliant render and i hope i'll be able to make something to this level at some point!

Thanks mate.  I know about the eraser, I should have added sss and some grime.  Oh well.

Haha yeah. Looks good though. far better then what i can do! And you use blender which is even more aweseome! the interface of blender screwed me over so much.

I use Autodesk maya and at the moment i'm trying out something i wanted to do for a while which is clouds or other fluid types (currently clouds) I had an idea for a picture and 3D clouds would make it much easier XD

Hmm.  Blender is great for clouds.  And trust me, you get used to the interface.  In fact, the maya interface screwed me over the first time I started with it.

Yeah. well i'm just finding out that maya is also great for clouds XD Haha i think all packages are as good as the other. they have their downsides but i think they can do just as much. it all depends on the person using it.

And about maya. i only know the interface well because i was taught in college. it was mandatory for the course XD I originally started on 3DS Max which i think has a superbly easy interface.

To be honest i couldn't find a single thing in blender. I used tutorials and non of it made sense... all the shortcuts cluttered my head. @_@ I prefer searching tabs over shortcut keys. I prefer to see what i'm doing over memorizing a million commands.

Hehe.  Yeah, we mostly use shortcuts.  This makes it have an extremely steep learning curve, but the workflow a little faster.  Oh, and the undisputed king of clouds is Vue.

haha XD

Well i never heard of it!

But like i said about 3D software in general is that they can all do just about the same things. Just depends on who's using them.

Anyway i shall make a low quality render to make into a gif to upload here. will only be short though

Eh.  There I'd disagree with you.  Generally, the tool is only good as the artist using it.  However, with 3D software, they use different algorithms to solve the raytrace.  So, one algorithm might be superior to another.  That's why new renders look better than old ones; the algorithms have improved.

Ah well yeah thats true. Ok I understand what your saying XD there is always some limitations.

Though i think some CGI films made over 10 years ago look pretty good even today! I love re-watching them and seeing all the details in them.

Eh, I would agree with you on that front.  Also, your clouds don't quite look right.  They look like big soft lumps instead of clouds.  Clouds have more detail.  In blender we call them wavelets, but I can't remember much about clouds in maya since it's been a while.

Yeah i know. they are kind of cartoony. there is a reason for that. XD so it fits in with the way i draw. I'm thinking of maxing a bit of 2D and 3D animation.

Also this is my first ever attempt!

I don't know. may be the color and hard reflections.

If only I could get my renders to look this good, my stuff would look that much cooler.

GraphixS6 In reply to ttrlabs [2012-02-28 21:47:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, your materials and render properties look fine. I think that your render quality would go through the roof if you added a nice studio backdrop and some good lighting to your props.

That's my main problem: I don't know how to get good lighting.
