Considering how heavy boned he seemed, I thought it reasonable that his younger self would be thicker and somewhat wider. I imagine him being a quick but clear thinker, with a pretty informed outlook on life.
I have this theory that at some point he met Guru Pathik. It would explain his knowledge of bending and his spiritual education, when you consider that Guru Pathik, too, was well informed on spiritual matters despite being a non bender.
