Wow... XD That's a heck of a plot twist--after they spend all this time running from the emperor, I never in a million years expected L to hand the children over to him for adoption! It's certainly strategic; there's no way L and co. could have fought their way out of the capital, and this way Mello and the other Guild children still get to be close to Near so that they can protect him. On the downside, this puts Near right where his father can find him to try and kill him off.
A few moments that I particularly enjoyed this chapter:
o When the emperor told his children not to bow to him. That gave me a bit of a glimpse into his character, and proved that he wasn't completely dead inside.
o The description of Near's court clothing--aww, I'd love to see a picture of him in this outfit!
o Mido and Near being in the same scene. (This is an inside joke; my sister Couy think Mido looks a LOT like Near, and so she calls him "Near's Dad" whenever she refers to him, LOL)
o The masquerade ball scene, which shows that the children all settle into court life rather well, that the emperor and Halle get together (possibly even she becomes the new empress, which ironically means that she's technically all of the children's mother at that point), that Near and Mello have potential pairings being introduced at some point, and--my absolute favorite part--that B will be coming into the story. The way you wrote his dialogue was so in-character, it made me smile while reading it because it reminded me of the dialogue in "Another Note" between him and Naomi.
It would seem that B has a bone to pick with the emperor...I'm very curious to see how that might play out. Anyway, this has been a great fanfic, and will definitely go down in my memories as one of my favorite Death Note fics ever. Be proud of it, it's wonderful, wonderful work!

Wow, I’m apparently on a roll! I loved the twist at the end, it was one of the things I was eagerly awaiting to reveal to the audience, and so it kept me writing, if anything just to get there. I wanted to show that the Emperor himself is an incredibly cunning and dangerous man, whose intellect could stand against even L.
When the Emperor told Misa and Near not to bow to him, I was worried that some people might find him a little out of character. But I also figured that since we didn’t get a huge glimpse into his character in the first place, maybe I could get away with it. I like this scene. I find it heart warming, even though the Emperor tends to be cold. I want him to be three dimensional, like all the other characters, with a personality and a backstory of his own. He plays a pivotal part in “The Four Winds”, so be sure to catch it.
I don’t know if I can draw Near in his court garb, but since my scanner is working, I could give it a shot, I suppose.
It’s funny that you should mention that Mido and Near look alike, because I too think that Mido looks a lot like someone, but not Near. In fact, it plays a part in my story.
I wanted everyone to know that there was a sequel, ready and planned out, so I put in a preview. It’ll probably change a little by the time I get to actually writing SoL: A New Age, but it’ll be pretty much the same. B comes into the story even sooner than “A New Age”, he makes an appearance in “The Four Winds”. It’s hard writing him sometimes, because I constantly want to make him just bursting insane. But that’s not in character. B is very calm, and calculating with psychotic undertones. I do get to vent some of that pent-up crazy, because I gave be these “fits” he sometimes has, and they can be really dangerous.
