Yes, you are right; like you said, there are plenty of beautiful fields of poppies in Picardy and Normandy.
Claude Monet has immortalised them in some of his beautiful landscape paintings.
This field poppy, "coquelicot", is wild, and it is often found in corn or wheat fields during summertime in Europe.
After WWI, the "Flanders poppy" was a symbol of dead soldiers.

The view of vast plains, a mosaic of colours, greens, yellows,
sometimes a brown roof, a little farm,
and the bright red of the poppies, here and there....
Fields and fields
fields are to the horizon, endlessly,
to the sea.
Poppies dancing in the wind,
light, fragile and ephemeral,
the sweet melody of poppies.
This delightful view mellows the senses
and it fills the heart with joy.
