Description Justice Society Redesigns, Part 2.

Name: Billy Batson

Age: 14 (as Billy Batson), 20 (as Captain Marvel)

Species: Human

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual

Abilities: Flight, accelerated healing, invulnerability, superhuman speed, reflexes, agility, stamina and strength, clairvoyance, enhanced intellect.

Personality: Billy Batson is an enthusiastic young man who has a great joy for life. However, he also has a short fuse and is quite impatient. Due to his age, he’s prone to hormonal outbursts and the occasional temper tantrum. At his core, though, Billy is a caring individual who truly believes in making a difference.

Notable Family: C.C. Batson (father, deceased), Marilyn Batson (mother, deceased), Mary Batson (sister)

Friends/relationships: Courtney Whitmore (Stargirl, friend)

History: When he was an infant, Billy Batson’s parents were murdered by the intergalactic orphan maker known as Granny Goodness.

After this event, Billy fell into the foster system where he bounced from home to home. Though he spent some time on the streets, Billy eventually became the adoptive son of a pair of wealthy philanthropists.

Some time later, he was imbued with divine gifts from the wizard Shazam, who sensed great things in his future. Using his newfound powers for good, his deeds earned him great praise within his native Fawcett City and eventually led towards his membership within the Justice Society of America.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

You'll have to excuse the very basic bio for Captain Marvel/Shazam here. As I mentioned previously in Mary Marvel's piece, I envisioned Billy and Mary as the He-Man and She-Ra of the DC Universe. As such, that meant keeping Billy as simple as possible and giving him a happier upbringing than the comics have portrayed within the modern age. Still, I wanted to keep some edge to the character if only to make him seem that much more relatable and realistic as a kid in his early teens. His inclusion within the JSA in my head canon is meant to fulfill a very specific role and he is in fact meant to be analogous to someone within the Justice League. You'll see what I mean by this as I reveal my intentions with the JSA somewhere down the line with these head canon drawings. Although, I welcome any speculation.

Design-wise, it's pretty simple. It's definitely very New 52-inspired, since the old look was… well… dusty. I wanted it to look modern, young and show him off as very Roman-esque. Since I wanted Mary and Billy's superheroic identities to be very inspired by the Roman pantheon they draw their powers from, it only seemed logical to style him a little more closely to that aesthetic. Beyond that, you'll notice I gave him dark brown hair to match Mary's. While I know not all twins are identical, I liked the idea of Mary and Billy at least resembling each other a little more closely to draw those parallels. After all, He-Man and She-Ra shared the same hair colour.

As always, feel free to comment letting me know what you think of the design below.

Which team will Batson be included in?

It depends entirely on where people vote him in. He was in both the JLI and JSA polls, so you'll have to see if he received enough votes to make it onto either team. Otherwise, he likely won't be on any.

I still sit here and think why did they change his name? It makes him sound ridiculous whenever he shouts 'SHAZAM' - I wouldn't have a problem if they had called him Captain Thunder.

He has to say Shazam and WANT to change in order to transform. I mostly say Shazam now since I will admit, I AM digging the new take on his mythos and while I wasn't a BIG fan of the name change at FIRST.... I re-read those back ups and I realized that they didn't make Billy Shazam's champion like he normally is, they full on said he IS Shazam now, not just getting powers through him but IS the Wizard now. SO in that sense it makes sense.

I guess, but still it sounds ridiculous if you have to shout your name in order to transform and call upon lightning.

When Billy became the Wizard's successor after Infinite Crisis, he still wasn't called 'Shazam' - he was called Marvel despite dressed in white and having white hair.

I don't have a problem with alternations to the mythology that was done last year and is current, even if the new Billy kinda sucks.

I guess my issue is at how they could have called him Captain Thunder like he was in Flashpoint if they wanted to avoid him getting mixed up with Carol Danvers.

Oh I agree it's a dumb idea, as far as the name goes. Honestly why not just call him Marvel? I mean yeah you run the risk of Marvel threatening to sue, but? Come on if Marvel can have POWER Man and WONDER Man, DC could do this. Just on the title of the comic call him The Wizard Marvel or something like that. I mean Billy WENT by the name Marvel before and Marvel has NO trademark on the name "Wizard Marvel"

Call him "The Wizard Marvel" on the comic and just refer to him as Marvel IN the comic. There ya go. Mary can still be Mary Marvel, Freddy becomes Marvel Jr.

Or they can call him Captain Thunder.

Actually I always thought Captain Miracle would make even MORE sense for a new name for Billy and company for a number of reasons

1: The fact "miracle" is a synonym for "marvel" and while it doesn't mean EXACTLY the same thing, it's very close to it.

2: Miracle can also refer to a higher power, and since the Marvel Family gets their powers from gods? Fits EXTREMELY well.

3: Captain Miracle, Mary Miracle, Captain Miracle Jr, the Miracle Family. Just seems really natural when you say it like that.

This is probably my favourite design of Batson to date, except for maybe his design in Injustice, but that's up for debate.

Sure, but you should know that it's inspired by a Roman aesthetic (as referenced in the artist's comment), as well as Black Adam's design from the New 52.

Personally i am more a fan of the shoulder cape but this works as well, also the sleeveless look is rather interesting. On the subject of he-man is it just me or are the people of eternia ( in the original) the biggest bunch of idiots in the galaxy if they cant tell that prince adam and he-man are the same guy!

Thanks! I appreciate it.

It's not weird to me at all that no one knew that Adam was He-Man since he transformed magically. Such a transformation implies that it cloaks them from detection.

I like it. The sleeveless look's pretty cool looking, if not slightly odd since I'm not used to it. LOVE the cape as well. It could do with some seemlines on the red parts, but overall it's a nice look for Billy.

I'm not really too keen on the no sleeves approach to Captain Marvel. That, along with the smug look on his face, makes me think of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. Sorry, but that's just my opinion.

Either way, the sleeveless look and the grin are there for a reason. This drawing, as stated in my comment box, is part of my head canon. The smile itself matches the personality I outlined for him. I definitely encourage you to read what I wrote. That's always appreciated.

The sleeveless look is twofold. First, because (again as outlined in my comment box I envisioned Billy and Mary as the He-Man and She-Ra of the DCU. Secondly, its meant to reflect his Roman roots. Something that has always bugged me was that his powers are derived from Roman deities and yet his costume has never referenced that. It's a huge missed opportunity. Think about it, Captain Marvel is kind of like a Roman version of Wonder Woman.

While you may not like those elements, I wanted to try something new and reference different sources. Life is boring when you play it safe and stick to the main path. Am I right?
