Description 8/10/96! The last daze of Cicero (Hump) Yard....GP38-2s and an SD9...Soon the rails be gone; much concrete be poured, and JB HUNT trailers would be parked unceremoniously in the bowl! So much for my first RF phase!

Yes, good eye! A pair of SW1500s. I sometimes caught them headed into the yard at LaVergne.

Man, I wish the BN had lived on past the 90s. Maybe they would've left this yard unchanged...

Great photo though!

I sure wish, but they were doing much more run-throughs and Galesburg was the big yard. BRC was starting to do a majority of classification in Chicago. I remember reading the July '88 Trains and it seemed that Cicero's writing was on the wall. Now I don't see much on the Racetrack at all these days except Metra and Amtrak. Either trackwork or they are diverting onto the Chilli Sub that goes through Hodgkins. No passenger crap to get in the way.

But why get rid of the hump?

For intermodal. Eola to the west is the main freight yard. Galesburg is the main classification yard and a lot of manifests run through to the BRC. I took a whole roll of film when they were taking out the tracks.
