Story

From the day they were born, the Harlequine Stallions Joker an Sandman spent every moment of their live together. Although Sandman was well known for his roughness already as a foal, and Joker as a hand raised horse rather chose to be in company of humans, they got to be great friends. The weanlings were brought to the stallions rearing herd, and could enjoy their childhood for the next three years. Zoey had her work cut out to keep them in check – one day they broke out of their pasture, another day they wrecked the water tank. When they reached the age of three, it was time to start basic training. Back in the stables of Elbdale, they saw mares for the first time since they left their mother. While Joker didn’t seem to be very impressed, he always seemed to live in his own world and see everything with different eyes, Sandman’s interest for the mares was awoken.
He became increasingly disobedient, refused cooperation in the training lessons and ran excitedly in breakneck pace on the lunge without paying attention to Zoey when he saw or got scent of a mare. No one could imagine to that point, to what extend the problem would grow soon.

It was autumn and the Harlequines had just finished their first breeding season. It has been how everyone had expected – the rare breed was very popular and people payed enormous amounts for a mating. The stallions had been all over the world to meet the finest Arabian mares and their training almost stagnated in this time. Nonetheless Zoe already took small rides with Joker, he was very calm and didn’t bother to be separated from other horses. In diffence to that, Sandman still didn’t even accept the saddle. After another unsuccessful training session, Zoe leaded the dark stallion to a pasture near the training stables, where Joker already grazed. A thunderstorm was coming up and Zoe wanted to give them some rest before it would begin to rain. She turned Sandman and took of the leather halter. She clapped the stallions neck unsatisfiedly, but Sandman didn’t care about the gesture and walked away. She closed the gate with a deep sigh and walked back to the training stables. The next horse she was planning to ride was Kaladerion and the work with him promised to be more enjoyable – not that she didn’t had problems with the sensitive halfblood, too, the chestnut stallion had thrown her off so many times when he refused to jump. But at least he sometime he started to trust his rider and developed into a reliable eventing horse.
Zoe was deep in her thought, when an earsplitting scream sounded over the lands. She turned around terrified, seeing how Sandman dashed against his former friend. Joker tried to ward off the attack but the stallion was full of fury and didn’t let up on him.
She ran back to the pasture, screaming and waving the halter in her hand, she hoped to drive the stallions apart, but Sandman seemed to be blind with anger. She stopped desperately in front of the pasture, watching helplessly how the black horse tried to drive the other one into the corner to kick him pointedly. The piercing screams of the furios stallion and Zoeys desperate shouts called Diegos attention, who was inside the training stable. He walked out to see what was happening and when he catched sight of the fighting stallions, he ran straightaway down to the pasture.
Meanwhile Sandman had reared again and this time he had been able to grab Joker on his throat. Joker stroke with his forelegs to get the assailant away, but Sandman jaws were thightly locked around Jokers throat to eliminate the competitor.
“NO! Sandman! Release him!“, screamed Zoey in horror and opened the gate. Diego, who had reached the pasture in the meantime, shouted: “Zoey! Stay away from them! It’s too dangerous!” But before he could grab her arm and pull her back, she was already slipped through the gate. “We have to separate them! He’s killing him!”, she screamed desparately, but she knew that Diego was right and she couldn’t risk to come to close to the struggling hooves. “GO BACK TO THE GATE!”, commanded Diego and pulled the halter out of her hand. The rope thightly in his hand, he threw the heavy leather halter upon Sandmans croup, but the stallion didn’t even seem to notice the whack. With the rope in his hand he pulled the halter back and threw it another time, this time he aimed for the stallion’s head. The stallion indeed let up on Joker for a moment, when the leather straps hit him on his nose. Joker availed himself of the opportunity and bolted to Zoe, who quickly opened the gate. Sandman recovered himself within seconds and stroke up the persecution. “Quick! Close it!”, shouted Diego and right after Joker ran through the gate, Zoe pulled the heavy, wooden gate and closed it in front of the furiously yelling stallion.

While Diego stayed with Sandman to make sure the thrilled stallion didn’t jump over the fence, Zoe ran to the stables and searched Joker. She found him shivering in front of his stall, he breathed heavily, his flanks were moving up and down. Zoe started immediately to check his physical condition, he had a huge bite injury on his throat that was now bleeding heavily, but the trachea seemed to be unscathed. There were numerous other bite wounds and contusions on the rest of his body but nothing critical. She stroke the stallions head reassuringly while the shock revieled and her eyes filled with tears. “I’m so sorry Joker. Now it’s the second time I didn’t care for you enough!”, she sobbed.
After the stallions were vetted, Jokers wound even was stitched, Zoe and Diego went to Davids office to inform him about the incident. Elbdale’s owner listened to the explanations with growing worry.
He sighed. “That’s it. This horse is a danger for everyone. Not only that he still can’t be ridden, now he even becomes aggressive against other horses. I’ll call the vet and arrange an appointment for the castration tomorrow. Too bad, that’s a great loss for the Harlequine breed. But I can’t take the responsibility for that any longer. Zoey, you don’t come near to him again. The training’s finished for now, until that beast is brought to his senses.”
“Isn’t there another option?” Zoe once again felt responsible for the accident.
“I think Zoey is right. You shouldn’t decide this overhasty. The enormous studs of the Harlequines are our main source of income. Maybe there’s an alternative.”, considered Diego.
David laughed. „I don’t need that money. We don’t go bust because of this, you don’t need to worry about you job, my friend. But you should worry about your physical health. I have no use for a dressage rider in a wheelchair.”
“That’s not the point. He’s a valuable stud. Let’s shelter him in the old stable. Then he doesn’t have any mares around and will hopefully come to rest. And I will take on the training until we have found a solution.”, he proposed.
“Fine!”, David answered, “He get’s one last chance. And I’ll enquire what to do with him.”
