Description

Leave it to Japan to not only be the first to come up with giant humanoid mech, but dino mechs. I would of liked to be in the room when the engineers decided it would be a wise tactical decision to draw up the plans for a giant mechanized death dino robot. Armed with a sniper pule cannon, bean gatling guns and more missiles than you would need. A radome provides battlefield date and advanced targeting. This is one mecha dinosaur that's not going extinct without a fight.

This is my finished HMM 1/72 Zoids: Gun Sniper Naomi Custom with Wild Wiesel Unit by Kotobukiya (now that is a mouthful lol) painted in the scheme of "let’s use up paint I have on hand". Painted with Tamiya spray cans, hand painted with model master enamels and weathered with artist acrylics. This kit only came with stickers so the decals are from my hoard. Mostly 1/35 JGSDF and 1/48 mig markings (I think) overall I am pretty dang happy with the model and outcome. Lots of cool parts, poseability and overall badass design to him. I did have a few nitpicks with the model kit itself(figurine, stickers,$$$,plastic nub placement) also this guy came with many more  guns(to the point  I was worried he would look a little to ridiculous, even for me) and a couple of said guns were bent on the runner. So I thought I would not waste time fixing those parts, and just leave them off. I’ll just save his extra weapons, because you know at some point ill have much more fun slapping them on a tank.
At the end of the day I am happy I tried something new, picked this guy up and gave it a go. If I see one of the bigger zoids on sale someday, ill would defiantly get another one.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Americans!
As always questions, comments and suggestions welcome.

How did you make that awesome rust effect on the zoid

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enc86 In reply to gabrielthewolf15 [2014-12-01 22:49:30 +0000 UTC]

a few different techniques.
one is just a simple brown "wash"   thinned paint(art acrylic in this case) applied to the kit, then wiped off, having the paint stay in the recess.
some "dry brushing" get a sot flat brush, dip in paint, remove most of the paint on paper towel, then brush on raised edges.

and a bit of a old sponge dipped in paint, dabbed on a paper towel then carefully applied to he model for the chipping effects.

hope some of this helps in your future builds.

so for that second pic you posted I do the same way you did on that what ever it is you did it on?

enc86 In reply to gabrielthewolf15 [2014-12-02 02:02:21 +0000 UTC]

yea you can do that on whatever you want. the the second pic,"dry brushing" is pretty easy to learn/do. i used a metal color in that, but you can use rust color or any color you want. it adds dept and creates a weathered look on the raised parts of a model. its something i do to at least some part of every model build.
just practice on a scrap piece and you will be good to go.

enc86 In reply to gabrielthewolf15 [2014-12-02 02:08:03 +0000 UTC]

well a metal color can look really good too. add in a brown wash on top(first pic) and it will look like light rusty metal

lol i know your stash is crazy but if you see one of these on sale, do it. think you would have a blast. they are pricy, but go toghter really smooth and are awesome fun to paint. in the end you get some sort of mecha Dino or beast, which in a model collection like yours, would still be a real eye catcher.

thanks friend.
yea i think most of the time mecha is really suited for the bright colors, but i prefer the more military "realism"(using that very loosely) pretty happy with the colors, seeings how i really didnt plan them, and used what i had on hand. i was like, think these will work and did not look back.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Markonator In reply to enc86 [2014-11-27 18:43:43 +0000 UTC]

Well I think that you've been doing that so much and for so long that you can improvise and get impressive results Which you've proven with this one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enc86 In reply to Markonator [2014-11-27 18:47:32 +0000 UTC]

yea for military models i would guess around 3 years almost, so my eye for colors is usually pretty good. sometimes i get the best results just winging and fudging it as i go. best not to over think things sometimes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Markonator In reply to enc86 [2014-11-27 19:56:05 +0000 UTC]

Nice! Over thinking can result in it looking to planned and unnatural in my opinion. Too planned out I guess I'll be facing the same when I get to paint my lair computer case. If I plan too much I think it'll look unrealistic.  Also I haven't ever airbrushed before so I don't think there will be even a try to strive for perfection

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enc86 In reply to Markonator [2014-11-28 06:42:43 +0000 UTC]

that and sometimes when i plan too much, i really get bogged down or stuck on a way of thinking. had some build take sooo much longer cause i had wayyyy to much planed, and ussaly those projects then start having some loose ends or things that will always bother me. sometimes planning has worked in my favor, but really just having general ideas, paint and just seeing where the build takes me are the most fun. think my next project will be alot like that as well.

think you will be fine dude(reminds me i still gotta check out your gallery this weekend) as long as you dont be harsh on yourself or expect perfection, you will have a great paints on it in no time. practice on some cardboard or scrap first and you will rock it out i am sure.
