Description Another thank you gift, this one for my former internship supervisor at the Morton Arboretum for all her work providing grad school recommendation letters and serving as a reference for job searches.

Getting to help the bluebird nest box monitors was one of my favorite memories from the internship, and so I thought I'd immortalize a few of them with a father feeding one of its fledgelings-- a common sight on the grounds during the summer with both parents involved.

Acrylic paint on greenwing macaw feather.

How do you paint on feathers? It sounds difficult to me.

Think of it as a small and oddly shaped canvas. As long as all the barbs are zipped in place to provide a continuous surface, you can paint anything you want on a smaller scale.

Sometimes I don't do backgrounds, but when I do I put those down first, then the base colors of the subjects and finally all their details.

I never really thought it was that hard, to be honest. I just hold the feather in my left hand and paintbrush in my right.

It sounds so hard because I've never done it before. But all skills improve through repetition.
