It was early, the birds were already up, chirping right next to Billy’s window like a broken alarm. Him and the featured critters were out of sync, their biological clocks completely out of whack. He tried to shuffle around and put a pillow over his head, but it was all for nothing. The human alarm clock ran. This one was supposedly accurate, but it was still too early in his body’s opinion. He was definitely not a morning person.
Camille trotted towards him at the stable’s entrance. She had a big smile on her face and two coffees in her hands. Billy couldn’t decide which one was the best. It was rare to see her have such a big expression on her normally stoic face. He grabbed the coffee she handed him, and his body screamed a little internally as he sipped on the hot liquid. That was better.
The fillies were already inside. Camille had gotten them in from the fields they had spent the night in before Billy was even conscious of where he was this morning. Damn she was efficient. Together they prepared the two horses, one of whhich had decided it had been the perfect night to enjoy a mud bath, and it was not Opawica. It was never Opawica. They had to get their coats clean anyways and washed them so thoroughly, short damp coats were squeaking under their fingers. Off they were, to the showing grounds, after wrapping the two fillies in equestrian bubble wrap. Camille appreciated first hand Billy’s time spent on desensitizing the two mares at loading, as they went in just as they would have in their own stalls.
Arriving at the show’s vicinity, they parked in the designated area, unloading their horses and greeting familiar faces as they walked by. The place was an organized chaos of febrility. There was a certain tension in the air, the one where excitement and worry mixed into their blood and gave them the last little boost of energy to go through the events fully awakened. Billy certainly needed it.
It had been years since he had shown, and this was his first re-introduction to it. His heart pounded in his chest at every little thing around him, his anxiety barely under control. He was thankful Camille was there. Her serene strength was exactly what helped him ground himself. It was all for fun, he reminded himself. He had put absolutely no expectations on his assigned filly, Nunavik, although he hoped for the best. She was still so young, learning to live her life in this strange world that demanded so many even stranger things from her. He was there for her, and for fun. First sign of overwhelming stress from both his horse or himself, and they were out. This was not worth the anguish or trauma.
Camille and Opawica entered the ring first. Following as the entrants all poured into the enclosed space, she elegantly glided over the short grass. Her orange little mare was following her calmly and with even more poise, her stride full of grace, a dignified look on her face. Then came Billy and Nunavik. They walked in in a more matter of fact way. Billy was trying to hold himself together, keeping his focus on the present and his filly behind him. He let out a deep breath that shook slightly towards the end as he stopped near his friend and her horse. They watched other contestants walk by, with amazement and apprehension.
They had to wait for their turn, for the judges’ attention, patiently fidgeting in place. Lost in thought, Billy couldn’t see Camille well from where he stood, Opawica blocking his view. He had hoped chatting with her would help ease his nerves, but she was most probably busy, or just as stressed as he was. He could feel his thoughts spiraling, losing his grip on his own heartbeat. His knuckles paled on the rope he held, feeling that the ground would certainly open and swallow him whole at any instant now. It was only then that a deafening neigh right next to his ear. He reflexively covered it but it was a bit too late, he felt his eardrums scream themselves.
Nunavik was screaming alright, saying hi to one specific horse that Billy had never seen before and did not understand why she called out to it. Opawica seemed to almost roll her eyes, as much as a horse could, at the graying filly. Too loud, she must have thought. Billy couldn’t help but turn around and thank his little mare softly. She had snatched him out of his own anxiety pit of despair, whether she knew it or not.
It was finally their turn. Camille flicked a strand of blond hair behind her ears, and walked forward. The hair immediately fell back into their original place, and she ignored it. Opawica too, flicked her tail, as if mirroring her handler. Billy let out a small breathy laugh. Funny how these two matched so perfectly. It reminded him of that one scene in 101 dalmatians. He watched them as they walked as the judges had instructed, refined and elegant as always. And then it was his turn. He led Nunavik softly, inviting her to follow his steps, and she did, like the good girl that she was. The filly was just as graceful, but her energy was still that of a young horse, a pep in her step that had not yet gone with maturity. Her tail was high and her ears alert, but her overall demeanor was composed. She kept her whole focus on Billy. He had seemed so anxious earlier, but now he seemed to have relaxed. Good, she thought.
