This is really awesome! How did you get the rim to that shape? Did you just keep adding layers?

Thank you ^_^
I made a ring of crumpled paper around it for a rough rim shape. I added multiple layers of paper and after it dried, I used paper-mache paste to smoothen everything. After that I lovely stroked the shell with sandpaper for the final touch.

Thank you! I was thinking of making a squirtle shell out of paper mache but didn't know how to get the rim to the right shape, thank you for sharing this with me! :]

No problem, I'm glad to could help ^__^
I learned the basic principle of paper mache stuff from some "Disney's Art Attack" episodes.
I recommend this video from DanMonsterMan [link]
He uses some nice techniques that maybe could help you too.
Like using tape to give the crumpled paper a smoother shape.

Wow this is a great technique! I didn't even know you could do this! I'm new to paper mache, and wanted to ask what recipe do you prefer?

If you mean the mixture for paper mache I usually use thick mixed wallpaper paste and printer paper. I prefer printer paper because it has only one color. It helps me to imagine the structure better. For stronger products I use a thinned white glue, like the one often used in Art Attack, and paper towels.
I usually wear gloves while working with the glue. If the phone ring or something else disturbs me, its easier to take off the gloves then washing the hands.
Make little test examples like a copy of a plastic dish to get used to the materials.

That is just totally awesome. XD
What're you going to do with it? Use it in a cosplay, or just keep it around as a decorative item?

I think just for decoration. If I would use this item in a cosplay, I would make a copy of it instead using the original. If the copy is damaged or destroyed during some funny actions, it would not be a drama and kill the fun.
