Medical History

Was emaciated and hypothermic upon her arrival. She was the only one of the band she was found with to survive.

"If you can find a horse you can afford, you're welcome to board it here. You've been a major help with Witch, Sinner and Queen since they were all weaned."

Iva couldn't help but smile. This was the first step to her becoming more than just a groom. Getting a horse would mean the possibility of shows and breeding. Best of all, everything would be her call!

In the following weeks she asked around, searching for a registered horse, preferably a mare. It wasn't long before she found what she was looking for and more. A backyard breeder had owned two Irish Sport Horse mares, both in foal. One died after foaling, the other was for sale. But there was a catch, literaly.

In one of his frequent drunken stuppors the man had left the paddock gate open and the mare and both foals had escaped. If she could find and catch the mare and foals, she could have them for free.

With Abby's permission, the young woman took Cal out to search. Plowing through snow would help the Cross Country mare build muscle, and so Iva was given a week with her.

Days passed and the snow fell continualy. The ground beneath the Dicorn's hooves became slick and then froze. on the fourth day of searching the rolling Tennessee countryside, they found them.

The chistnut filly, daughter of the dead mare, lay shivering in the cold. She had collapsed some time ago by Iva's estiimate, considering the tracks were well covered. The living mare's colt bounded around, trying to get the younger filly up and playing. But she simply laid there, slowly freezing to death.

The Silver Bay mare stood over her, protecting her from some of the wind. But it wasn't enough. Without help the tiny life would sputter out. And help had arrived.

Iva walked Cal slowly up to the mare. Now she could see that they were all thin, and it wasn't from a week in the wild. Slowly, she dismounted and took out a small bag of grain, a halter and a leadline. The mare seemed cautious, but was drawn nearer by the scent of grain. Iva slipped the halter over her ears and glanced back at the filly. She couldn't leave her to die like this.

With much difficulty, Iva raised the chestnut up in front of the saddle and then mounted herself. She found the blanket packed on one of the saddle bags and draped it over the warming body. With one hend holding the riens and foal and the other the leadline, she nudged Cal into a walk, slowly making their way home. The mare walked beside Cal happily, as if relieved to be in the company of another mare, her foal trotted along after, and the filly fell asleep, perfectly safe in the warmth of the blanket and Cal's saddle.

I realy hope that I at least get the foals. I'm in love with these guys. I'm trying to adopt them from *x-spirantcougar-x .
