"Starfleet Marine Command was not prepared for the scale of ground combat seen during the early months of the Dominion War. "
No, they were not. Even so, when Task Force 26 (My old RPG) sent in MACOS behind the lines, it was alongside former Maquis who knew how to fight asymmetric fights against the Cardassians and against the Jemmies, it worked pretty well.

I hadn’t thought of using the maquis as infiltration specialist. I am using them as ready to go pilots for the war effort though. I mostly just assume that we didn’t see this on DS9 because our heroes can’t be everywhere. The dominion war was huge! Not wait a week then fight another battle then wait another couple of weeks...

We (my former RPG group) was half Starfleet/half Maquis. I had one group of Maquis fly CAP around our base while we used the Ju'day-class raiders in, shall we say, in unique ways in and around the Badlands with capital ships. There was one sim where we went to Betazed to raise hell there with the Betazoid resistance after the planet was occupied by the Dominion.
