Description As the night draws near, a traveling hedge knight faces an obstacle during his journey - the ancient bridge was ruined long ago, and no passage is left.
A goblin occupies the other bank of the ravine, letting trough only those willing to pay the fare.

Intended as a speed-paint, but i liked the idea and worked on it for about 7-8 hours i suppose. Only the goblin i find too much cartoon-like, unfortunately.

Rather magnificient! Your style is deft and lovely coloured. Ominous impression of decay and danger.

Please pardon me asking, but would you by any chance be interested in helping out the volunteer project known as the Ninth Age (T9A for short: www.the-ninth-age.com/ )? It is the spiritual successor of Warhammer Fantasy, run by 300+ volunteer contributors all tinkering in their spare time, and it aims to go even further than Warhammer did along the paths of historically based dark fantasy smΓΆrgΓ₯sbord setting: i.imgur.com/dlmQkB6.jpg

For one thing, T9A is the perfect way for what used to be Warhammer fantasy fanart to instead become official artwork for an emerging setting, and thus gain much more widespread exposure.

Moreover, T9A is always welcoming artists who want to join their art team, and your skill and distinctive designs would be great to have on board, should you ever be interested in joining and help develop this setting by putting your own distinctive mark upon its art pool. If you would by any chance be interested in donating old artworks of yours, then here is a quick guide for T9A gallery upload of art contributions: i.imgur.com/ORLCncV.jpg

I can get you in E-mail contact with the head of their art team, if ever you're interested.

At any rate, splendid artworks! Evocative to boot, and starkly shaded like a dream. Have a nice day.

Brilliant, gives off a very fatasy-ish atmosphere

soft, yet very distinctive characteristics of what a mind dreams of and ponders! I love the troll/gremlin oops goblin makes me think of "my precious" Lord of the rings, that was their perception so very realistic and not outlandish or chartoonistic at at all..I hope that is a word"cartoonistic".lol (do not feed me after midnight) I Love it!!!

I think your picture is great, the contrast in light and darkness is well done and rendered. You can almost feel the dislike each of the characters in the picture has for each other. Good job.

This is funny how people see the dislike in this picture. I didnt feel it while painting this piece, although when i think of it now, there's no other way one could look on this scene. Thank you

thanks for the story with this picture, kinda brings it more to life, I think it's great, what is it you don't like about your goblin?

Thanks, the explanation clearly helps in an illustration
The goblin - i drew him on separate layer on top after finishing the rest of the piece, and i have an impression that he looks like... a sticker. But maybe its just silly me

I have to disagree, he doesn't look like a sticker at all, in fact at first glance I barely saw him hiding there, to get a better look at him I magnified the pic, to see what you were talking about, so he fits well, Idk what you could do better, maybe put a little shadow on the ground behind his feet? maybe that will help him feel more grounded

DevJohnson In reply to deathb4design [2011-02-21 11:38:46 +0000 UTC]

hmm, thats... actually well for me when you disagree
The shadow, it can be a little messed up, because after i drew the goblin i stretched him and turned him and moved.... and never got happy with. But he is as he is, and i don't go back to stuff, and change it, cause most often the stuff gets screwed up and worse than it originally was.
Thanks for you valuable opinions!

It is a very cool painting, I like the soothing colors, and the idea it depicts. The goblin, well I like this goblin. He seems almost cute with his long ears and big nose, to the point I', worried that the proud traveler might kill him, or hurt him, instead of paying fee. By the way, is he having a pet dog, the goblin?

Thank you very, very much for such a long and kind comment, i rarely receive these
I was actually worried as well, what if a hothead knight slays a foul creature? But then, i decided that such a goblins has to has some means to thrive on such a tollhouse. Maybe he has hidden traps and devices, and for sure he is mysterious and cunning beyond measure. He'll take care of himself, that's how he makes living on this forgotten pass.

And yes he has a pet... something . Don't know if dogs fit well with goblins, but this thing has red eyes, nasty teeth and foul breath. Maybe it takes care of the goblin, in case some foolhardy hero wanted to keep his coins and pay with his steel instead.

Good, you put my mind at ease... Goblin's safe. . He seems likable, and decent. You know he could have been a bandit looting week traveler or pillaging villages with some hobgoblin mates, but he just offers a transport, like a boatman or a ferryman. Perhaps he is monopolizing the only way to get across and his offer seems like an extortion... BUT for a goblin, it's decent enough job!

He reminds me of Weenog... a goblin servant of a wizard Oric from Icewind Dale (it's a veeery old PC game). Weenog was just a servant but liked to think he was Orics apprentice... (Now I'm writing bollocks, sorry, don't read it ).

Pet something... Good. at least he is not alone in the world

Keep up the awesome work!

You know, when Icewind Dale came out i already then remembered some really ancient computer games It may seem so but there not only juveniles here on DA Oh my.. how the time goes! I got my first PC around 89', there was the Lotus challenge and other stuff.. Anyway! I recall some of the story you're talking about, but never played ID that much.
I've been gamemastering for more than dozen years now, and lately i use my homebrew fantasy setting, where everything is how i like it, not conceived by some developer . I turned the goblins into something more fitting for folklore legend - mysteriously appearing from nowhere, offering strangle deals and stuff to sell... The concept for this piece derives from these ideas. I must start to write it down, cause there is already a lot of stuff for this setting, i run like 2 campaigns there and few dozen game sessions.

Thank you for the cheer, I shall work hard and not falter
