Description This started out as a quickie but ended up being 3 or 4 hours of work. Im really actually pleased with this one. Its also my first piece in 16bit instead of 8. not sure if it made a difference in quality but it did in file size

again me raping `hameed 's 'roids

also, thanks to ~N3UR0N for the little tip about the rays.

and just for you tks, i tried not to sharpen the stars.

and for all you eagle eyes out there, yes, my planet has chicken pox. its a sensitive matter for him, so please dont bring it up.

critique the shit out of it.

I am having some issues with planets. I always see people with these crisp clear planets. Mine always turn out a little blurry or not really detailed. I used many tutorials and kinda did some on my own, but they never look how I want them. Any tips?

my best guess, your not working with big enough textures. the most important part of making a good planet is the size of the original texture you use. for my best planets, i use a texture that is around 8000x8000px. then i sphereize while it is so large, and then bring it into the piece and scale it down. what happens when you sphereize is that you loose an insane amount of quality in the texture, cause you are enlarging it by so much. the only way to counter act this is to start off insanely large so you can scale down by a huge amount. check out [link] start with a canvas of about 5000x5000px (most peoples computers cant go as high as 8000x8000+ due to lack of RAM), and use 4 or 5 of the textures you find there, without scaling them at all. then once you have sphereized the texture at its full size, bring it into a piece around 1200x900 (or something close to the size you work at) and scale it down. youll see the difference

Great thanks, didn't know that about the sphereize that it brings the quality down.

Luckily my computer could handle 8000 pixels

Overall great but a little more blending in the darker matter in the foreground of the "nebula?"
Also the planet textures are rokin' but still a little flat. Straight lines on a sphere tend to curve...but still better than I can do.

I like how the smaller, dimmer stars near the bottom haven't been sharpened, but the larger stars in the middle of the piece are almost a bit too blurry, and I think I would have liked them better a little sharper. Of course, this is an imperfect world. Had you done so, someone else would have told you they would've looked better blurrier.

Perfect image.

this is awesome, you should try showing how the coreolis effect affects the clouds' pattern of pivotal movement; it would be a nice touch(;

love the detail, your a god with planets and lighting

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Crosseout In reply to DemosthenesVoice [2008-08-14 17:31:58 +0000 UTC]

(; the centrifugal force creates the coreolis effect. Becuase of how the earth spin around its own axis, clouds get a spin pattern; I think some of Hameeds stuff shows its pretty well. I believe that the way water spins when going down the drain is due to this effect as well(;

That big planet looks more 3- dimensional than most, I'm really liking this overall.

thanks man.

you create a new square doc. fill it with black, noise, radial blur. mess with levels and opacity and erase any hard edges and then sharpen it. im still not good at it but n3ur0n has it down pat
