Well, is the only 3D variation linear 3D? A great deal of the variations are the same. I feel that I have seen similar fractals w/o the apo 3D. I may be dead wrong.
My icon is an example of a 3D-esque fractal made 2.05, and I have made gads of rect and curl fractals w/o 3D. I haven't installed triboarders and tried it yet to see if I get good results.
As far as it being better is concerned, I am not sure. I think the one benefit to one over the other would be time spent rendering. This guy is clean and crisp and doesn't suffer from the oversaturation issues that 3D fractals often have, so there might be no benefit in this case.
I find it amusing when I see fractals done in 3D which don't use the 3D elements. I was getting frustrated using 3D so I have been on a couple of month break.
