Description Panthermonium, but with a more evil looking rakshasa (panther-headed, inverted-palmed villainous being). Illustration for 'Call of Silver', the first chapter of the story 'Lynn d'Vadalis' by , who I believe writes under the name Victor Sylvain.

Said chapter can be read here:
Lynn d'Vadalis I - Call of Silver

SHE WAS PERFECTLY AWARE THAT SHE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE, but that had never prevented her from coming, her and Aideen. And most of the time, nobody found out about it. If they did, Artan d’Vadalis, her father and tierna of Merylsward, would pretend to grow angry, and uncle Kirrin would lecture them about the dangers of the wild. The effect of these sermons was to fan the girls’ appetite for adventure. Any punishment was merely making the game of not being found out more interesting.
Lynn was not too certain where ‘here’ was, either, except that it was deep within the forest of the Eldeen, and fairly close to the foothills of the fierce Icehorns. Wherever the thick canopy of the forest cleared, she could catch glimpses of its snow-covered peaks, bathed in the red light of the volcanoes, standing firm under the menacing clouds. Like the armies that, so people told her, f

The whole story (which is still having finishing touches added) will be well worth checking out. I read through an early draft which I found very impressive and engrossing, transcending its genre as an Eberron-set Dungeons and Dragons fan-fiction. Go and have a read, if that sounds like it might be up your street. I'm sure the author would also welcome comments and feedback.

What comes to mind for me is the trials and tribulations thrust upon the Scottish by the Romans, English, Danish, etc.   Jus' sayin'...

I love it! The color palette is well chosen and the contrast between the kneeling figure and the other ones makes it standing out really nicely! If you don't like to get critics on your work please ignore the following paragraph.

There is something wrong with the blade though. The way it catches the light makes it seem like it is twisted or bend somewhere in the middle, I'm not entirely sure if that effect is intended. Also the shininess of the blade takes away some of the focus from your kneeling protagonist and I'm not sure if there should be that much light down there. The upper body of the sword owner and both his right arm and leg look a bit unfinished/ unpolished; there seems to be some shadow missing in the inner fold of his elbow (please excuse my English, not sure if I'm being clear here) and to much light on the leg which is therefore lacking some plasticity. I totally love your depiction of the rakshasa though! The armor looks really really good. Keep going!

You got the hands perfectly!  I love it!  It was already great art, but that little detail has sold me on this being great!

Very good color and sense of luxurious evil.  Rakshasas are... Very frightening.  A novelist friend of mine did a good job with one in a novelette.

Huh, last time I played AD&D, rakshasas had tiger heads and normal hands. Awesome image though.

Well, it seems they come in different kinds, none of which are particularly friendly.

Maybe they just changed it, I haven't played dnd in years... thought 4e was very bad and never touched it again.
Though the hands kind of bother me there... didn't you have trouble painting them "wrong" on purpose?

Syltorian In reply to neserteme [2015-01-17 16:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Never touched 4E either. I don't know where the hands come from. Maybe they thought that they needed something incongruous. Just in case people didn't notice the animal head first. Oh well, that's D&D Monster Manuals for you!

Well said! Hopefully they won't screw up with the upcoming Tides of Numenera and Pillars of Eternity games, kinda looking forward to those.

The hands come from the mythology of India. Rakshasas are shape-shifters there, the hands being one of the few ways of detecting them from normal folks.

Thanks for that information. That's quite interesting. They can shapeshift in D&D too, but would then be able to turn their hands the right way around. Another part where D&D does away with the original mythology.

In this case that's how you can tell them apart from normal folks who have panther heads.

Correct.

For a TV episode that shows the traditional, pre DND Rakshasa check out  Kolchak: The Night Stalker: Season 1, Episode 11 Horror in the Heights.

Not sure about AD&D, to be honest: that's an earlier version. By 3rd edition, they come with many kind of animal heads, and zakyas (the warrior class) are generally panthers.
