In recent years, I've been staying away from the term SJW due to its overuse by the far-right. Yes, this type of people still annoys me to no end, but honestly, the far-right's overuse of the term kinda tainted it for the rest of us. However, there is one thing that some of them believe that I honestly don't understand and that I'll talk about today - some of them are against interracial marriage, especially if it involves a white person.

To be honest, I don't get how a self-described liberal or progressive would be against interracial marriage. One they especially seem to be against is white men and Asian women being together, because of the stereotypes of white men having Asian fetishes. Not all relationships between white men and Asian women are based on fetishes and misogyny. (I remember reading an article that was celebrating Asians marrying other Asians - as if it's wrong for Asians to marry non-Asians.) As for Asian men, there are plenty of Asian men who are in relationships with non-Asian women. The same is also argued of black men and white women, again because of stereotypes, and ignoring the fact that many black women are in relationships with non-black men. These days, it shouldn't matter whether or not a couple is the same race.

These are the same people who also get mad when they see an interracial couple in a popular movie or TV show - for example, they might get mad if the Asian female character ends up with a white guy instead of an Asian guy. Yes, I do realize that Asian men are underrepresented as romantic leads, but honestly, two people falling in love who just happen to be different races shouldn't be a big deal. It just takes a quick search to Tumblr, Twitter, or some liberal news website to see people getting salty over a work of fiction. It's sickening how people these days think fictional characters matter just as much as real people.

Not too long ago, liberals were the ones fighting for the right to interracial marriages, which at one time were illegal in the vast majority of states. (My state was one of the few that never had laws against interracial marriage.) When Loving v. Virginia struck down laws banning interracial marriage, it was one of the major victories for the civil rights movement, and as the decades went by, more and more people accepted interracial marriage. The same thing happened with same-sex marriage - far more people are accepting of same-sex marriage today than there were 20 years ago. (Even in the conservative South it's starting to change - nowadays Mississippi and Alabama are the only states in the country where less than half of the population supports same-sex marriage.) If certain liberals oppose interracial marriage, then that's society going backwards, not forwards.

That is why you can't call yourself a liberal if you do not support interracial marriage. If you're triggered by a person of color marrying a white person, then you're not a liberal - you're a bigot.
