Description

: Hey guys!

As you know, the November 11th holiday is coming up: Remembrance Day, as we Canucks know it.... our American friends call it Veterans Day.... our British fans also hold Remembrance Sunday the Sunday following this day.... our fans in France and Belgium call it by its other name, Armistice Day.... our Polish fans on this day celebrate Independence Day, as the armistice that ended World War I allowed for the return of Poland as a distinct and unified country after over a hundred years of partitions....

But I digress. Needless to say, this is a day to remember and be thankful.

Now, regarding this year's special November 11th commemoration pic....

This year, 2018, marks the centenary of the signing of the Armistice that would put an end to World War I—or, as it then known as, the Great War, aka the "war to end all wars"—later leading to the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

And this was where the event occurred in the fall of 1918.

It was here inside the forest at Compiègne, approximately 60 kms (37 miles) north of Paris, and it was here at this very spot where had stood the railway carriage of Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the French army commander-in-chief and Supreme Allied Commander. And it was inside that very railway carriage where the Allied commanders and the German delegation signed the Armistice, ending the Great War. This order ceasing hostilities would come into effect "on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month".

COMPIÈGNE1918—2018

LEST WE FORGET

But this year, 2018, also marks the centenary of Canada's "last Hundred Days" of World War I before the Armistice would take place, and those days would see possibly the largest amount of hostilities and blood-shedding—not just for Canada, but for all sides in this war—than at any other time or battle during the whole of the war.

Their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

LEST WE FORGET

Ironically enough, if I'm not mistaken that same railway car was used when France surrendered to Germany at the start of WWII.

Mais oui! At Adolf Hitler's insistence upon his army's conquest of France.

I quote Sir Laurence Olivier, narrator of THE WORLD AT WAR:
"Once the French had signed, Hitler ordered the site destroyed. Germany had had its revenge."
And the railway car was taken back to Germany as a war prize. It was last seen inside a Berlin museum that was bombarded and its contents destroyed during an Allied air raid on Berlin.

Over the years after WWII, the site would be rebuilt, with the current museum, and with a faithful replica of this original railway car installed at the site in 1950.

BTW, I am also reminded
by my good friend qMargot
that November 11th this year also marks
the centenary of Poland's rebirth
as an independent nation at the end of WWI.
