Would my own profile be a good example of what you're looking for? o:

To widen the content, it's actually not just a simple div align class unfortunately.
Actually, with Deviantart's in-site coding, every custom box has default margin sizes, which are pretty large. The margin size is the empty spaces to the left and right which we're speaking of. So it's actually not "force centered", but rather, "force spaced", to be technical! You could say it's not that yours "isn't working", because by default, that's actually how it's suppose to be.
A lot of users among the community who post customization tutorials have a few codes called "Wide Widgets!", which basically erase the forced margin. However a huge misfortune, a lot of these codes have "broken", because they all use a code some way or another that Deviantart has no longer in their site.
Basically, the simple rule is, every custom code you find published is based off what's already in the site's coding. That's how it's possible, actually!
Think of Deviantart as one big tree. The codes published by users like CypherVisor , SimplySilent , and many others, are only mere leaves of what they have discovered.
Regardless! Enough blabbering. This is the code in particular I've used:
Perhaps you can use this code as well, by putting it in the very beginning of all your boxes. However it isn't that simple either, as there would be a few adjustments you'd have to make (like inserting your background image where it specifies), except that's all explained in its description. Be sure to read it all thoroughly!
If you have anymore questions or concerns, I'll still be here.

This only works for me if there is no background image. Is that normal?

This is great.
Is there any way to change text, h1/2/3, and link colours?

I don't know about link colors but, to change the text size
you can put Insert Text Here right where
you're supposed to start putting your text. Then remove
the # and replace it with the size text number you want.
It would look something like this:
I used the first code for this one. c:

How do you make two of these boxes in the same custom box?

I think you just have to put the code twice, one under the other.

Heyo,
I'm not sure why, but my group here is using the purple and blue buttons pretty sure-- and not sure why, but in Firefox and Internet Explorer, the boxes are aligned oddly to the right from the smack middle. Dunno why. Looks fine on Chrome, however.

I have problems with things being oddly displayed in firefox and IE as well. Have no idea why or how to fix it.
