Description The blistering heat of the desert beat down on Jonathan’s hide as he walked through the sand. He was a little peeved that the stallion had decided not to join him — wouldn’t it be safer being in numbers?

Never mind that. Jonathan continued to wander in search of a waterhole, wind whistling in his ears. The sand beneath his hooves seemed to cave in little by little as he pressed his weight against it, making him stagger or take an extra step. And then — a force gripped at his front hoof. Naturally Jon attempted to take a step forward, and he did manage to pry his front hoof out, but then the strange grip latched onto his back legs. And then ALL of his legs.
Panic lashed through him like lightning at the realization that he could not move. Naturally the stallion began to thrash wildly, but then he heard a shout pierce his eardrums.

”Stop! Don’t move,” screamed the voice, and soon the thrum of hoofbeats followed, “it’s quicksand!”

A fiery red chestnut mare came into view. She rushed to the edge of the quicksand, stopping just before her own hooves could suffer the same fate. She lifted her head as concern blossomed in her eyes.

“Move slowly,” the mare advised as she paced back and forth along the edge. “Do not struggle, or you will only sink deeper.”

Jonathan felt his limbs jitter. Every urge to rear and buck was almost enough to throw all logic in the wind, but he steeled his nerves and nodded to the red mare; slowly, he lifted his left hoof. There was some tension, but soon enough he did manage to free that hoof. He stepped towards the edge, hoof by hoof, practically comparable tip-toeing to some degree. The mare’s ears flickered forward as Jonathan came closer, her eyes wide, and she backpedaled to properly give the stallion space.

Slowly but surely, Jonathan freed himself from the killer sand, and he snorted as he turned to look at the patch of quicksand. He spotted a half-sunken skull sticking from the surface, and immediately he turned his gaze away. He won’t think about what could’ve happened. He focused on how he survived, thanks to the mare.

”Oh, thank goodness,” a nervous laugh bubbled from the mare, panting as through she had been holding her breath the entire time. She threw her head down for a few seconds before glancing back up. “I’m glad you actually didn’t sink!”
