Description
This is a beautiful little bay up in Mendocino county called Anchor Bay, population 340. There’s nothing up there, except some very beautiful beachfront properties and a campground . California’s coast running from where the Russian River empties up to Oregon is a solid cliff, broken only in three spots. Humboldt Bay, Crescent city and here. Kind of like Kong Island. If you were wondering why that part of California is so underpopulated, that’s the long and short of it. You can’t get in by sea, there’s no anchorages, the interior is full of huge mountains and steep canyons. And sasquatch, but we’ve been over that . People started to get creative in the 1850’s and every sort-of calm spot of water along the coast was turned into a makeshift landing, known as ‘dogholes’. Goods went in, & railroad ties went out. Anchor bay was one of these places, and now it’s a nice getaway with a few b&b’s.
That’s about it on anchor bay so I’m going to swap topics to the artist who has been inspiring me to get better at my waves, Charles Vickery. He’s a dude from Illinois who was born in 1913 and died in ’98 and he’s easily the best marine artist I’ve ever seen. Here’s his estate gallery and wow do I have a looooong way to go. He’s genius at light, and all of those crazy wave shapes that I don’t understand, well they just flow off his brush like it’s perfectly easy, everything perfectly toned. A lot of the shapes he uses I recognize from doing oil as vastly easier to do irl than digitally, so that’ll be my goal in some distant week after things calm down a bit here, do an ocean in oil. I am not giving up this fight until I can paint waves like that though. Aspirations!
just imagine me as giving vickery the looks that xander’s giving kore in the last half of this week’s comic and that’s about the situation. Yup.

The details and different sea colors and effects involved in this piece are truly outstanding! I especially am in love with that smaller center wave at the forefront of the picture with its beginning movement and aqua transparency . Too much! I can almost HEAR it! Excellent work !!! 🙂👍👍

I love the realism in this and the use of light. I will check out Charles's work to see where you want to get to.
