Description
At the base of a rugged mountain, amidst the dust of a white salt flat intermixed with green grass and a small shallow lake, a herd of horses just introduced several new foals to their ranks. The wild horses of Montgomery pass live in a mountainous landscape with sparse springs and scarce valleys, where the cougars manage their numbers instead of humans and helicopters. Yet some of the herds have grown smarter, finding a wide and open valley where the cougars cannot sneak up on them. Thus their numbers have increased, and humans may have to step in once again.

For this drawing I referenced a photo that I took while on a trip to track and photograph the wild horses of Montgomery pass. Several foals were born during the time I was there, and I was blessed by how many horses I actually got to see in the mountains as well as on the salt flat. The horses shown here were two mares (a bay and a palomino), a new foal (also a bay) and a young yearling or two year old (palomino). I'd hoped that the background would come out better, but I found it incredibly hard to do this in greyscale since the salt was white and the palomino's were so light as well. But, I'm happy with the result and I hope you all enjoy it.
