Wow, you really exerted a lot of effort here, and I can see that, however I have some points in this pic, for you to improve and be a much better artist. But first, the good thing about this pic is that, I loved how you draw the cat here, the designs and details of it, looks beautiful. I loved how you colored this too, and also the whiskers of the cat looks great. However I want you to improve on how you draw the proportion of the cat's eyes and also the shading on this pic. But all in all, you did a great job and I hope this will make you be a much better artist and improve more, so just stay awesome!

Hello, I'm here from Comment Project. a.deviantart.net/avatars/p/r/p… " alt=" " title="ProjectComment" />

Overall the picture is good, the color scheme is nice and the fur moves in about the way that fur does on an actual cat. Where you have problems is around the jawline of the cat. See, there should be indication of an indent or line going from the center of the mouth to the nose and the corners of the mouth should disappear behind the two 'lobes' of the top lip which gives a better illusion of depth. It looks kind of like the cat is pursing it's lips, which isn't something cats can do and I think if you were to extend to lines of the mouth to better outline the bottom jaw you'd more or less fix the geometry of the face. You may also want to add more shading around the eyes and nose to make the snout look like it's protruding towards the viewer a bit more. Other than that the body of the cat doesn't seem to give any indication of the anatomy underneath the fur, which all seems to move in one direction. I understand this was likely done due to time constraints but if you wanted to improve it further I'd add shading to indicate how the cat was standing and give a general sense of where the legs are.

Other than that good job, especially on the details of the fur, the above is just what I'd do to improve the work.

Hello, thank you for the comment. You are quite right about the jawline needing mor work, I did try to make a line going from the mouth to the nose, but it so faint you can barely see it. I need to have more practice when it comes animal jaws. And you are correct that I need more shading, especially when it comes to the nose. As to the body, he never was standing when I took this picture, he was lying down resting and you can't see his leg, that why the body is as it is.

As much as I love cats, this art looks really good. The tabby design is drawn neat, & the overall way you drew & eventually colored is wonderful. The one thing I really love, though, is the eyes. The golden color of your cat's eyes look crisp & in between the lines, but from the angle you're drawing your cat from, the left eye looks smaller then the right eye
Now, that makes a great transition, because there are many things I'd like improved. First of all, the ears. They look a little too long, but if it's part of your cat in real life, I wouldn't count that. Now we have the mouth... boy, the mouth really bugs me. I don't know why, though, so that won't count either, unless you have a little backstory on that.
Finally, let's move away from the face and focus on the details you did on the body. The one thing that needs to be improved is collar; from the angle you drew Milo from, the bell needs to be lowered a little bit more than where you placed it at. The collar itself looks good, though.
Sorry if I was rushing things, but there really isn't anything wrong other than what I've said, so please take my criticism with a grain of salt.

Thank you very much for the constructive critique.
I should let you know that my cat left eye in real life is indeed smaller then his right. He used to get into a lot of fight before and receive quite a injury a few time just above his left eye, some time the injury were quite ugly. Since then his left eye is always looking like it is now.

His ears are also very long in life also, I would probably argue that his ear might be wider then they were in the original photo.
I do agree with you about the mouth, I may have drawn that too thick and redder then it should be. Now that I think about it, it also maybe a bit too low on the face. I just wanted to keep the mouth simple, but may have failed in that part. It never really bothered me at first, but now that you brought it up, I can see how poorly drawn and thought out it is.

As for the collar, the original photo was of Milo lying down and relaxing, this bought the bell much closer to his face as shown in the pic. I'm surprised you thought the collar look good. Too me it drawn to ugly and rushed.

I am a warrior of the critique CRITmas Ninja force e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

First of all this is a cute cat painting. The cat here seems to have a look of curiosity in its eyes and in its pose, like ready to jump on its prey.

I like the blue colour you have used for the background. It is a good contrast to the brown hued cat portrait. Also the shadings of the darker brown spots in its fur are cleverly woven in. The amber coloured eyes are very impressive. It is a good idea that you have highlighted the white whiskers stronger, so that they stick out better.

But there are also a little asymmetry in the painting. Whereas the ears and the cat's face is long and thin, the nose is very broad. Perhaps a little re-work in the noses anatomy would be fine.

Overall, it is a great painting. Keep up your good work.

A Christmas ninja warrior critic, an odd combination First off, let me just say thank you for the constructive comment.

This is my cat standard "What are you doing?" look, while he was lying down resting and I decided to take a photo of him.Β
I went with the light blue background to make his whiskers stand out more (since they're white). I believe that the whiskers are a little too thick, I was using a type of white ink pen, but I think I put it on way to thick. So it surprised me that you think it looks good. I do agree that the nose is a little too broad, I also think it colour is a bit strong and makes it stand out a bit too much.

Thank you for the comment, I'm glad you like the picture.

Not really Christmas
It has just fallen on the time of Christmas, but really is an event called CRITmas, hosted by the writing CV BeccaJS.
We are four different "armies" and the winners are those with the most constructive critiques in the pockets.

You are very welcome for the critique/comment

I think the white thick whiskers are good because they stick out more. If you have drawn them thin, so would not recognize them in the light blue background.

Well, I have to admit that I like traditional paintings and yours is really lively

Bravo with the fur! I can't tell you the exact flaws without a photo but for me, the eyes aren't the same (unless that is the case). I guess the mouth isn't put center enough. Else, good job

Yeah his eye is like that, it wasn't until I started to draw that I realise his eyes don't match. He get into fight a lot when he was younger and received a few injuries just above his left eye a few time. Also I never realised his mouth is slightly off centre till you mentioned it. Thank for pointing that out.

Wow when I saw this thumb it looked like a photograph for a second, so detailed!

The shape of his body threw me off though. It looks a little unnatural with one shoulder sticking out. Cats don’t have that profound shoulders and their body is usually a bit more round and fluffy. (Unless maybe in very particular angle mid walk.)His face on the other hand is very well done and well structured. I absolutely love the detailed texture of his fur. (I have a little tiger myself and he has the same fluff on the top of his ears as your Milo.<3 ) His eyes are also beautiful! They are very expressive and reflect the light very realistically.

The only thing I could remark is that the outlines of his eyes, nose and ears are a little too harsh and rigid. You should try leaving openings in your linework sometimes, especially where the light hits them and making your lines heavier in other places. Variation in your lines will make the artwork more lively and will give it more depth. c:
You could also pay a little more attention to light and shadow next time and think about where your light source is. From the reflection in his eyes it seems to be on the right, so his left side should be a little darker.

The background is a little disappointing compared to the beautifully detailed cat. Instead of putting a lot of effort in coloring the whole page equally blue (which is really hard and never turns out completely smooth), either leave it blank or go wild and add some different colors or just color part of the page. Hiding your pencil strokes also never works so try to put them either in one direction or completely scribbly.

Overall it is still a beautiful drawing! Keep it up and happy holidays!

Thank you very much for the constructive comment. It make me happy to hear that you thought it was a photo

The original photoΒ  was oh him lying down on his side and relaxing. When I started to draw this picture I started to draw the rest of his body lying to the right of him. It was at this moment I realised I didn't have to draw his body as the picture was going to be framed and I was going to just show his face and the lower part of his body. That why his shoulder look as it is now. When I scanned it into the computer I didn't bother to crop that bit off. It makes sense now that the picture is framed, but yes I can understand your confusion here.
I do agree with you about the line work. His eye I thought look all right, maybe a bit strong, but his nose and ears I was not happy with. I try to fix the ears to an acceptable level, but his nose I couldn't get looking right, I kinda gave up on it and was not happy with it.

Yeah I was lazy with the shadow and lighting on here. I never really done much animal drawing and was not confident with my skill to make the shadow and light look good on fur, plus I had to get it done by Christmas so time factor was another problem and didn't have time to experiment with it.
The background I just made it a simple blue just because his whiskers were white and I was worried it wont stand out well on just a white background. I didn't want any fancy background, just something to make the whiskers stand out more. I do agree it uneven in some area though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AkiaWalker In reply to Cerebro-IV [2018-01-01 11:44:59 +0000 UTC]

No problem at all!
And I didn't mean you had to do anything fancy with the background. With multiple colors I mean somethingΒ like this:Β Zine pag 10-11 Β It also showes the pencil strokes nicely.
Or just color part of the page like the blue background here: Doi Chang,Thailand 2 Β or the gray texture in the top right one here:Β Flower crown
Even if you left it blank you could make the wiskers stand out by drawing a tiny gray line under them. Just something to think about for the future. c:
