Description
Some of you have been referring to Celery's fun companion as a 'cat' which is not recommended, so it has a new name. The Limbo King.No hints this time around. As always, your theories are welcome but remember--unless Celery has confirmed it, it's not canon B)

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I am getting a Puella Magi Madoka Magica vibe from this nuzlocke. This page in particular. I mean Limbo King is acting a lot like Kyubey right now.
Also Celery is pretty oblivious to cliffs.

when I first created the Limbo King (the first albeit cancelled run of this comic) he was actually much different, but their intentions overall are the same. I don't intentionally draw upon other stories, but I suppose Puella Magi was the first to popularly create the 'horror companion with an ulterior motive' chara type so it's a pretty easy comparison

One of the first in recent memory. I can't think of any right now, but I'm sure this has been done before. They just did it in a genera of anime, that is overwhelmingly positive. Magical Girl is one of the most positive sub generas of anime. The girl(s) in question find out that they have incredible power(s) they have to save the world, universe, or however high you want to set the stakes, and they usually overcome the odds, and beat the big evil, or whatever. Happy endings all around. Not Madoka Magica, every aspect of that series is one long train ride through Hell. There is no happy ending to be found here, especially if you take the movie Rebellion into the equation. Homura puts herself through a seemingly endless nightmare about her not being able to save her best friend romantic interest Madoka, only for Madoka to become a god, and Madoka in consequence being separated from her forever. In which Homura gives into despair, and becomes the complete antithesis of Madoka. Basically by striping a large chunk of Madoka's power, kidnapping Madoka, and hoping in time she will accept and love her. So yeah it took a genera that is usually sunshine and flowers, and just cast a violent thunder storm on it. That's why it's so popular, and hard to avoid, basically because it came up with a very unique spin on the genera.
I think it's part of the art experience though. The artist creates the piece, and it's up to the audience to come up with interpretations. I just think there are elements that can be interpreted as you borrowing. But that's common with all media. Point is, Madoka Magica is a anime that is on the forefront of popularity, and people will compare, because it's part of the process.

definitely! Comparisons or parallels between media are always drawn because it's almost impossible to really create an entire subgenre from scratch. Some are executed more popularly than others and then become a staple of the genre (Puella Magi in this case).
My only hope now as I continue this comic is that while major elements such as 1)guardian character with an ulterior motive 2)underlying horror tones 3)overarching theme of life vs. death 4)good vs. evil characterizations are unclear/the lines are blurred, are shared with some popular anime or media,
...that more subtle details A)The Limbo King is immediately a suspicious character B)The Limbo King has much more control over direct actions of Celery, among other things I can't reveal yet, will shine through and start to separate the two characters as similar yet different, and not so much clones of one another.
One of the biggest fears of a comic artist is to appear /too/ similar to popular media :'D But picking up similar underlying themes is unavoidable and not necessarily bad C:

Well it's not really up to you, how your audience interprets your work. The audience interprets what they want, and they draw from other media, because there are familiar themes, and tones for the audience to bridge gaps. I hope you meet you goals with getting the more subtle details across, but the audience is it's own entity. It acts, and responds how it wants. If your comic appears too similar, so be it. That doesn't mean you can't craft a good story. ^^

now in comes the effort to see how many not proper names for elm you can come up with throughout the course of the interactions with him, and it's quite enjoyable. the glowy distortions in the limbo were really cool, and really like the expreesions this page, particularly the 3rd panel's expression.

Glad you liked how limbo turned out! I can't say we'll be seeing it again any time soon because I hope to really get the ball rolling once I make all the necessary set-ups for the plot B)

Celery was quite calm about the way that she was falling off the cliff there. It took her a whole three panels before she realized that she might die, which is either a very impressive amount of bravado, or an incredible display of stupidity. Or both?
So, Celery's not from the Pokemon world. Interesting. Did Limbo King just pick some poor girl at random and go "You. I want to mess with your life and drag you into this strange world and force you battle with Pokemon"?
I like the purple glowy background of the limbo world. And Celery falling and shouting that the meeting was pointless was hilariously drawn XD

Celery seem to really love adventure and new things, so cliffdiving and extreme sports are right up her alley! Really, the Limbo King is trying to help her out here, adding so much excitement into her life like this.
