Another character matte in the same series
Might take a little break from these, or rather, experiment with a different mood/rendering. Using the same techniques in a full scene would probably give some interesting results...

this one is a mix of photo and painting (hence matte-painting) I use bits and pieces of photos for my base then do a lot of color correction. Then I paint on top. The photos just speed up the process (and it's what's pretty common in the industry) but you can do the next bit once you have any good base set down.
For the painting, it's about having a good selection of random scatter brushes in photoshop. I usually do about 5-10 layers using different textured brushes and set the layers to overlay or multiply, depending what I need. Then I erase and soften the layers using masks and an airbrush. Sometimes i just scribble with a regular brush too at a very small size to get some more random marks in there
It's alot of experimentation, and obviously you use finer textures for smoother skin, and gritter textures for older or more scarred skin.
