Description

The young mermaid reached to the limit between the sea and the surface and narrowed her eyes in determination before crossing that line. The sea splashed against her and her hair felt extremely weird, but the warm feeling of the sun hitting on her skin directly compensed it all. The girl let a happy chuckle as she enjoyed that feeling she had never felt before. And, as a bit of wind passed through her hair, she jumped across the border of the cave’s hole, completely entering inside the human part of the sea. The excitement she felt in that first approach to the human world was almost impossible to explain with words. It felt so right, so warm, so different! Something was changing every second and she loved it!! Nothing was constant on the surface!!

“This is amazing!!” Star exclaimed floating on the superficie as she swam to one side to other of the sea

All of a sudden, a weird noise, almost as a really loud drum was heard, making her startle. “What was that?” she mumbled turning around and staring to the thing she has been forbidden the most: the shore.

All the rumors were real: there was a point of the sea that actually met with land. And that land was full of things she didn’t know. The view was indeed breathtaking, the sand seemed so warm on land, where there was a part where the sand wasn’t wet but dry. It was stunning how there were so many boats at one side of the shore and they were beautifully painted in vibrant colors, it was real different from the way she was used to seeing them, sinked under the sea, broken and destroyed. Out there on the superfiece, they were actually pretty... beautiful.

And as she realized that there were no humans on the shore, she started to swim closer and closer to it, in order to see the most she could, to the point that her body could barely hide itself inside the water. It was a huge place too, for her surprise, and it was also full of life, with flowers and plants she had never even dreamed of before and many different types of animals she had never seen either. Birds, dogs, cats! It was like a whole new world above her own world!!

Star listened to that loud noise similar to a giant drum again, so she turned around, trying to find the source of it with a big smile on her face. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find its source, but she didn’t honestly mind, too happy to care, though that happiness started to wear off her face when she looked at the shore again and noticed a human walking through the shore. The princess covered her mouth quickly not to shout and dived into the sea again quickly. Then, she swam to a place where there was a rock that was perfect to hide behind. The blonde mermaid looked out using that stone as a shield to hide herself but at the same time she wanted to see a human for once and for all, because her curiosity wouldn’t take it anymore.

She peeked out of the rock to inspect the human and was indeed surprised to see the way it was now that she wasn’t in such a state of shock. The human didn’t seem really older than her, which was indeed intriguing. It was a boy, from around her same age, who was sat on the sand staring very focused on something he had on his hands. He was indeed a striking human, completely different from the ones that the mermaids said to have seen around the place: dark skin, brown hair, chocolate deep eyes and he had a weird black point on the left side of his face. That point was odd, but it was somehow a pretty cute point if you asked her. Maybe that was why he called her attention so much. The human was covering his body with clothes from different colors depending on the part of the body. His chest for example was grey and his legs black, but his feet were completely naked. She stared at his strange attitude of not doing anything more than staring at that thing that seemed like a box cut in the half, which he seemed to be inspecting quite carefully and moving a capa of the box always to the same side.

He may not be doing much, but there was something just so... hypnotizing about him that the young mermaid couldn’t keep her sight out of him. For an entire hour, she had been stalking at him secretly hidden behind that rock, until that sound of drums was heard again. Then, he stood up and started to walk away with a tired look on his eyes that made Star wonder what did he usually do moreover going to the shore. For Triton, she wanted to ask him so bad... but talking to a human would enough to kill her... so, no, that wasn’t an option... right?

When he left, Star decided to go back to her own world. But even though she was physically on her world under the sea with her friends and family, she was mentally on the shore, behind that rock, staring at that silent human who seemed happy staring only at that weird boxy thing he seemed to enjoy inspecting. Humans weren’t the way her parents told her... they weren’t horrible creatures that resulted quite disgusting to look at. In fact, that human boy seemed quite...handsome. He was indeed attractive and he didn’t even seem to try it, but there was something about him... something that made her want to know more about his world, all if she could.

Perhaps that was the reason why, the next day, she stayed inside that cave all day long until she heard that loud drum. Then, she jumped furiously through the hole again and smiled gladly to see that quiet focused boy sat on the shore. He seemed so peaceful that she didn’t dare to disturb, but it was still fascinating to look at.

That’s how a new weird habit started. And for two weeks, the mermaid would go to the forbidden wall, get inside the cave, wait till that weird drum, jump across it and stare at him for hours till he left. That custom became torture as the princess realized that just staring at him wasn’t enough. She wanted to talk to him, to know why he was doing what he was doing, to know how his feet worked, why he could breathe out of the sea... to sum up, she wanted to know everything she could about him... but she was too scared to see his reaction.

But that weird habit ended in the third week, when the stranger boy came without that weird box he would look up, and came instead with a white thing and a feather with something black on its bottom. Curiosity did the best of Star and she didn’t bear any other second without talking to him. On her head, she had practiced that moment a hundred of times, but on real life, it didn’t happen quite as she would’ve wanted it to be.

“Hey, what are you doing now, human?!” the mermaid exclaimed jumping to sit on that rock she had been hidding in the last weeks

The boy let out a shriek before realizing a female voice said that. He looked at the sides of the beach, but he couldn’t see anyone else there. “Eh, hello?” he asked in fear of having lost his mind

“Hi, I’m Star!” the voice kept up as the brunette kept on walking with his back looking at the sea

“Star? That’s a peculiar name... I’m Marco” he answered as he started to hear the girl’s voice every time closer

“Marco is a peculiar name too...” the princess opined. “Hey, Marco...”

“Yeah?” he asked confused because he could bet that the source of that voice was extremely near now

“Look behind you” Star indicated with a chuckle

Oh, boy, if you could have seen his face when he turned around and saw a naked girl on a rock. He turned completely red and covered his face furiously, doing his best not to see her. But that wasn’t as bad as when he realized that the girl wasn’t actually naked... but had instead a tail.

“Hey, are you okay?” the half-fish girl asked seemly worried

“I...I...I...” the boy started to say completely speechless. Perhaps he had been reading too many fantastic stories and he was now having visions, yeah, that must be it, because mermaids do not exist... no, no, they do not exist. “This... is a dream, right?”

“A dream?”

“Yeah, because mermaids aren’t real... right? They only exist on books, so yeah, you’re just a product of my imagination” he explained more to himself than to her. “You’ll see, I don’t have any friends so my mind is now making up a pretty mermaid to distract me from reality... perhaps I am reading too much after all”

The mermaid stared confused and shocked. She had been mentally prepared for any reaction: disgust, hate, a friendly reaction... but she hadn’t been ready to be treated as an inexistent illusion. And as that idea sinked in, she rolled her eyes, the fear or nerves disappearing, as she used her tail to splash some water on the boy’s face.

“Hey!” he exclaimed. “What was that for?”

“I thought you wanted a proof to see that I’m real” Star simply explained with a smirk

“That’s not proof of anything...” Marco decided folding his arms angrily before passing the feather he had with that black liquid on the bottom through Star’s hand, painting it black

The girl gasped. “WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!”

“I thought you wanted a proof to see I know you’re real” he answered with a smirk

The mermaid stared confused. He didn’t even seem that scared anymore. In fact, he reacted in really good way... perfect if you asked her. Wow, that was going to be way funnier than what she had imagined.

She started to look down at her painted hand sadly. “B-but... I don’t know how to take this painting out!” she cried putting a sad face

The brunette boy wide opened his eyes in realization and climbed up the rock in an extreme speed, surprising the young mermaid. He seemed truly worried for her, although they had just met. And by using the sleeve of his camisa, he cleaned that black liquid by rubbing it. “Oh, don’t worry, it’s just ink” he explained pretty focused on the hand’s stain, and rubbing it till the stain was completely gone.

Looking at him from a distance was something, but staring at this human by such a close distance was something really different, it was even more hypnotizing than before. She smiled at his factions which were even more intense from that close stance and, failing to resist the temptation, she caressed his face sweetly. At that, the boy looked up at her, a bit confused.

“Your skin is so soft... even though you stay all day under the sun! That’s great!” the princess opined with a giggle

Marco blushed a bit, not really knowing if that was a compliment or not. “Eh... thanks?” he asked confused

"Oh, sorry!" the mermaid exclaimed noticing his creeped out expression. "It's just that I've never seen a human from this short distance..." she simply explained way more relaxed than him as she got even closer. "You're not so different from us except for the legs... still, you're so cute!" she decided, proudly describing him without shyness.

The human chuckled a bit at her description. “Well, if it makes you feel better, I’ve never seen a mermaid from this short distance either”

“Really?!” she asked excited. “Then we have a lot in common!” they both laughed as a great friendship started slowly but surely to take place.
