Mira is an American steam locomotive who’s stationed in Chicago, who’s been handling the Milwaukee’s Hiawatha express trains ever since she’s been built in 1938. She’s been in service for longer than any other American engines, and thanks to her popularity with workmen and rail fans, she’s been given heritage listing so that she can’t be taken out of service nor scrapped.

The 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘂𝗸𝗲𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝟳 is a class of high-speed streamlined 4-6-4 ‘Baltic’ (𝘏𝘶𝘥𝘴𝘰𝘯) type steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), following on from the success of the Road’s Class ‘A’ 4-4-2s, the F7s being major contenders for the fastest steam locomotives ever built, as they ran at over 100 miles per hour (160km/h) daily.

This particular class of engine could reach 100 miles an hour on average during journeys across Chicago. Rumours are these engines could possibly reach 132mph (though that has been disputed by others). The Milwaukee F7s are accepted as the fastest steam locomotives by a different measure—scheduled speed between stations. In 1939, after they were introduced into passenger service, the Twin Cities Hiawatha schedule was modified such that the engines would need to run the 78.3mi (126.0km) between Portage and Sparta, Wisconsin in just 58 minutes—a start-to-stop average of 81mph (130km/h).
