Description "Kübelwagen" is short for "Kübelsitzwagen" or "bucket-seat-car." It's based on the VW Beetle chassis.

Around 50,000 were built for the German Armed Forces in World War 2. Compared to the Jeep, when the Brits and US evaluated captured examples, they felt it wasn't as good as the Jeep except for the more comfortable passenger accomodations.

This example is marked as a vehicle operating with the 1st SS Panzer Division. It's part of an  SS reenactor unit in the US, where this kind of thing is legal, so if you have concerns- our laws here are more tolerant of such things.

It reminds me of the Volkswagen Thing. I love it!

The Type 181 (Thing in the US) was actually developed as a vehicle for NATO. It was supposed to be an interim vehicle forNATO's "Europa Jeep" project that fell through. 50,000 of them were built for NATO countries, besides the civilian versions.

In my country, Mexico, the Type 181 is known as Volkswagen Safari. xD
I always wanted to have one.

As a writer/historian, I have an intense dislike for those who want to sanitize history or worse yet, deny that it happened despite overwhelming evidence. At least half of all history is ugly, stupid, ignorant, offensive, meanie-headed, disgusting, vile, revolting, nauseating, or scary, and it sure as hell was not politically correct. But it happened. We should study it and learn, not try to hide it or paint over it because someone decides that being offended is easier than learning what happened and why. Those who don't want to learn have the choice to look at something else, like cute kitten videos.
Historical fact: I like history and I like cute kitten videos, but then, I am an old curmudgeon.
Confucius say: Those who put their head in the sand should expect their butt to be kicked (maybe not an exact quote but I have a valid writers' license, and I'm still learning)
Road Trip Dog say: I worked for a VW dealer when The Thing came out. It may have been a fun Thing in some circumstances, but after a 50 mile drive in a Thing on a cold and rainy night I learned that it was not my Thing, but I would not prevent someone else from learning about it.
I enjoy your photography of historical machines. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I think The Thing is a very, very acquired taste.

I have a feeling those that are left are garaged and driven to VW meets or on perfect days to amuse the public as well as its owner.

Thanks for the support- My feelings are so mixed about it on a personal level. My friends at the Reilly Raiders would love me to come in and play but no way am I wearin' that damned hat.

I certainly would not blame you for that. The history is there and I acknowledge its existence and would not try to sanitize it, but I would not choose to aggrandize it. Yes, slight difference, but that's my comfort level.

You can always find a VW Type 181 (known as "The Thing" in the US) and paint it up.
