Basically just a loose idea and a design. I think I’m gonna make these guys free to use, so anyone can run with the concept and do whatever they please with it.

The NeoPhagous are members of a diverse clade of pupating vertebrates whose ancestors would typically lay hundreds of eggs each year. Simultaneous hermaphrodites, any given individual is capable of producing young by themselves.

Their larval offspring would historically of stick around in the same general area as the social troops of pack hunting adults, going from arboreal to grazing animals in the presence of their massive family groups. It was always commonplace for the adults to bury whatever pupas they could find in marked “graves” that a newly pupated adult would be able to dig out of and join society.

However, as this species grew more intelligent and populous, their complex, multi stage life cycle began to wreak havoc on the ecosystem. And when the food scarcity hit, it hit hard. And the herbivorous and immobilized stages of their life cycle were suddenly the only viable foodsource they had around. And they had a lot of it. This was how they discovered agriculture, according to most sources. As such, ritualistic cannibalism became very commonplace in the vast majority of NeoPhagous populations.

Many of them hold a belief in a sort of reincarnation, where any pupa eaten during its earlier life stages will keep coming back until chosen to survive to adulthood. And some would posit that living a hundred lives as an animal makes for a more reasoned, thoughtful adult form. This isn’t the line of reasoning most diplomats use though, mostly sticking to environmental and cultural arguments.
