I remember reading a story in National Geographic many years ago about a journalist that went on a field trip with a Russian game warden or wildlife ranger. So, after being out in the woods for a couple days, the journalist asks the Russian game warden, "why don't you carry a gun?" The game warden says in return, "Years ago I was checking on these tigers in this park when I used to carry a gun. I turned around and this large tiger was close to me and staring me directly in the eye. Then, the tiger turned around and walked away. I didn't hear the tiger or realized that that tiger was stalking me. After that, I stopped carrying a gun, because it would be useless anyways."
