As I told Glenda, who also did a version of it: It is indeed very slow, Luca asked me to set the settings to get it render quickly, but as you have noticed, to get a good result you have to lower the de-settings

Thanks very much - no I don't mind the link to yours, I've always loved it! My render took less than an hour. (I had my afternoon hour's rest while it was in progress and it was all done when I came back to it.) I have a pretty good spec of a pc so I don't suffer in quite the same way some people do with theirs. Thanks for the tip re d-settings - mine is set at 1 - same as your parameter. However I did increase the Smooth Normals to 5 just on the off-chance it would make a difference and I think it did - or am I imagining that? (I know so little about all those settings and it would be really useful to have a tutorial explaining what each thing does so we know what to expect

Increasing the de often helps getting rid of noise and loss in details.
A tip is, when you have done a big render, to use the "render part of image" feature in the post process tab to see what happens when you set de to 0.1 on a small part where there is much noise... I will check my render to see what I had it set to.

I see a symmetry of sorts amongst all the colors, shapes, and textures. The more time I spend looking at this, the more I feel like I'm gazing through a window into a hidden world not built for my senses. I could either be looking at a strange universe, or at the microscopic details of something living. All in all, a thought-provoking piece for a guy like me who loves the abstract and unusual.
