Description “hark, now hear the sailors cry, smell the sea, and feel the sky let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic...” - Van Morrison

This monochrome piece was created to experiment with various materials and techniques, such as using contrast and values with pen, as well as collaging. For the background, I used newspaper clippings, giving them an aged look by soaking them in coffee. I used assorted clippings to achieve a variety of colours and layers. After adding the anchor and the text with black ink pen, I layered more newspaper clippings in order to add the octopus tentacles. It was my goal to balance the composition and increase interest towards the anchor, with the addition of text at the top of the canvas and the tentacles coming from the bottom. I believe I achieved diverse values using the placement and sizing of the lines creating depth through highlights and shadows.

Lovely work! And I must say, being one who is perpetually steeped in coffee.... I feel compelled to tone it down to 3 cups a day... "lest I come  to resemble an old weathered  achor myself"
