Title : Heading South
… “-It makes no sense! This is a freakin’ witch hunt.” Jacob was furious.
“Don’t bother yourself with it,” Alot tried to calm him down, “and don’t dwell on it. You know I stopped listening to them a long time ago.”
“I know! Still it annoys me as much now as ever.” His voice was strict, but at least, he wasn’t yelling anymore. “I am a stranger’s son. I know I look different. My whole life, I keep running into those self-centred halfwits whose only purpose in life is, apparently, to let me know that I don’t belong here. In their opinion, that is. But! One can’t be more native than you. When they don’t like me, good. I couldn’t care less. But I will never understand what they have against you.“
“I say I am way too similar to them,” Alot sighed before continuing, “while also being beyond what most of them understand. I remind them of themselves, yet I also show them something they don’t grasp. Thus, they fear me the most. And it is easier to get rid of everything that evokes ideas, rather than facing their own self - which is always the hardest path.”
Henrik listened to their conversation from the start, and at this point, he decided to join in. “I never met a feline shaman in person,” he started, “but from what I've heard, our people don’t chase them away, rather try to include them in their birth clan's hierarchy.”
“Is it that, maybe, us horses are too proud?” asked Jacob.
“Ha!” Alot exclaimed, and smirked, “I have yet to meet a cat that is humble.” and with his head, he gestured towards Henrik.
Henrik hissed and lashed his tail in annoyance.
“-You see?” Alot turned his head to Jacob, his eyes smiling.
“I don’t know if horses are proud,” the lion said, “but they sure are skittish.”
“Says the companion of one that speaks with the dead.” Jacob raised his eyebrows, and wondered how they ended up as best friends.
…
As they talked, they slowly climbed up the hillside’s path. Once standing at the top, they looked around. Right there, the road was turning downhill once again and they could already see that after going over a few more such “bumps”, they could reach the next safe valley before sunset.
“We should hurry though,” the Shaman spoke up, “as the winds are changing. I am afraid a snowstorm may be coming this way later at night.”
“A snowstorm?” Henrik looked surprised. “Isn’t that a bit early for one?”
“Not really,” Alot replied, “However this year’s winter will arrive harsh and unexpected.”
“I see,” the lion nodded, “then we indeed must hurry. If the strong winds were to reach us here in the middle of the bare highlands, it wouldn't be any fun at all.”
Alot looked behind the trio. “Where are ‘Lyn and ‘Sikka?”
“The girls told me to go ahead, that they will catch up with us later. I think they said they spotted some herbs or mushrooms or whatever among the dwarf pines we passed by down the slope.”
“That’s just great, really,” said Alot with a somewhat tired voice. “How many times have I told them to not go wandering off at each chance they get? Besides, I can provide for myself just fine.”
“What if someone spotted them,” the lion muttered.
“Should I go get ‘em?” Jacob asked.
“Please do, and get back here as soon as possible. Tell them to move their backsides if they don’t want it to freeze very soon.”
“Sure I will. And I won’t take long.” Saying that, Jacob turned on the spot and ran back to get the two laggers.
