Description

this thing called art

about her: she is smoking, she is passively controlling the cloud, she is unaware of its damage; art becomes an enjoyable habit, when you do it you don't really see the consequences about it, not being able to do anything else, you remain trapped in the colors, in the smoke, in the cloud, in the habit.

watercolor, acrylic, pencil, charcoal and pen on watercolor paper (300g)
45,5 x 61 cm

my idea was born looking this photo, I just love it, it made images in my mind:

This art is stunning, the colours work brilliantly with each other. Particularly the way you.move from blacks/purples to striking oranges and pinks. The main thing that stands out to me is the single eye which appears slightly dull, something that maybe the colours surounding it and light reflection could fix. Another thing is the ear, you could maybe add a tad more detail as I barely noticed it. Overall, this is brilliant and it really moves me, the idea was one of those really unusual ones but I think it turned out really well. Nice job~ A very vivid piece!

I love this art work. I am captured by the color placement and how the smoke from the top is colorful and covers her eye as if the smoke is a shield of what is really happening. When deep below, where the black smoke is, is the reality.

I also kind of like how you choose red hair for the character. You might of choose it because it is bright, but I like personally because when I see red hair I think of a rebel child. One who wants to grow up too fast. And the way her hair is stringy as if she has been up all night not giving a care in the world. I love this piece and I think you portrayed this in a remarkable way, bravo.

This paining is so beautiful. I love how you used the photo as a basis, and created this masterpiece from it. I love the smoke she is breathing out, showing the colors used in painting, and how you juxtaposed it with the smoke from the inspiration of this piece.

I love how this is painted as well, you somehow make the 'smoke' seem to be alive and completely random, but still beautiful and not messy. The girl as well in the painting, doesn't seem to care or understand how much it is affecting her, and the way her eyes seem to stare at you, in a way mocking you.

Truly, this is one of your best pieces yet. Please continue to amaze me with your painting skills. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Downright amazing, can immediately tell its color/smoke can see a kind of void expression on the girl's face, and stunning use of both color and technique. The blend of colors doesn't make it appear like color vomit, which is impressive. The theme that art can be addicting is amazing and a head turner perhaps to some who don't understand what you mean, but the point is clear. As the cloud goes farther down it also gets darker, which seems a bit symbolic to me. Perhaps the addiction part? In any case, you just earned yourself a cookie (Hands cookie over).

I love the concept used for this painting and it has to be one of my favorites because the story you used in the description is just so relatable and you put that into a gorgeous painting. The colors are very well balanced, especially how you contrasted the smoke from light to dark, and your technique with your painting seems stronger in this piece in particular. I'm not a professional or anything but just being able to see this piece (from a amateur's viewpoint anyway) I was very pleased with the love you seemed to put into this. Overall, very well done.

I love this piece! Your technique is superb!! The way you made the colors dance in such a flow as your cool colors slowing blended with the warm colors of the smoke is incredible. The mix of colors made to distinguish the skin of the person and the smoke is awesome! The hair, the eyes once again bringing out such humanism. I must say this is one of my favorites. The smoke is incredible...almost looks like it's coming out of the canvas. Once again your technique is great and the way the color of her hair drips continuously down as the black also drips down makes it look even more appealling!

Incredible. I don't really have the technical expertise to really write a critique, but from purely an art lovers perspective what I can say is that I'm still in awe of your use of colors. I wish I knew how you used so many in one place without making mud. I've made more than my fair share of mud lol.
I think the only thing I noticed that differs from your previous works, is that in this painting the eyes don't seem to be as alive as per your usual. They actually look a little dead or unfocused. Of course as far as I know that may have been your intent, but that's the only thing I picked up on that I thought in any way took away from this work.
I'm a huge fan!

You've taken the essence of smoke and translated it onto paper. Remarkable.

Your technique is astounding. Watercolour is one of the most difficult mediums of art, in my opinion, and you are the master of masters at it. I would buy this piece in a heartbeat. Your use of various mediums is seamless. It's difficult to tell where charcoal's been applied because it blends in so perfectly.

The colours you used balance one another extremely well. At first glance, the right (facing the viewer) appeared to be heavier but it really fits with her face and hair on the left.

The negative space is ideal for the piece as it doesn't distract one from the weight of the smoke and the details of her face.

I especially love the tone, the darker shades at the bottom gives the head a "stand." The colours swirl with each other like droplets of paint in water to create a continuous flow of lines and textures.

Your style is distinctly yours and you're an inspiration for all. Anyone would be honoured to have half of your skill and creativity. I'm a huge admirer of your works.

This is my favourite of all your works, for sure. I'd be lying if I gave you anything less than 5/5 for everything. You've done a stunning job and you deserve to be in the textbooks of all art students.

First of all I like the fact that you have chosen well the colors to deliver the message of your work. I mean this is the kind of work that jumps right at me when I randomly browse trough, the image is well balanced in a fine contrast of pale colors/blazing accents ,great "cold-warm play", smooth lines, cool drips and splats, awesome representation of the smoke, on & on...and all together in a clean worked piece of art.
After all in my opinion the successful game of contrasts (from all points of view) is the "IT" in creating a brilliant piece such as this one.

i know very less about the techniques and originality due to my background with art, in general, so excuse me if i speak of something that's not true.
first of all, is this a self-portrait? semi?
i especially like the color of the smoke, one end colorful, bright and the other end mystic and even dark, and within everything in between which is what art is to me, and how art is not only coming out of her but turning into her, and i would say even possessing her, in a good way though art can go both ways.
the concept is very original but the image on paper, the quite literal piece, i feel it's been used before(girl partly turning/making smoke), without the paragraphs under the description, i would definitely look at this piece in an entirely different way, and conceptual art should explain itself.
i do very much enjoy your style and how it's not photo-realistic and that makes the mood of this piece more dream like, but i also do wonder how this piece would look if the girl was realistically painted with the smoke unrealistically painted, and maybe within the contrast of the two would make a different impact?
i hope this critique has helped and um reply so i know if i'm doing anything wrong or right.

This is quite amazing! Fascinating! The great definition of happiness and sorrow! That is outstanding!
I love all the colors in it, especially in the eye! It's like bringing a person into the fantasy world from the world of cruelty! I just had a thought this was photo-manipulated! Great work of the splashes! No offense, But you forgot that the right eye looked like she went derp. Next time, try to put it into the exact position as the other eye when you do any paintings like these. Anyway, this is outstanding and you should keep it up if you want more people to see how creative you are!

Your use of fluidity in al of your work is impecable. It amazes me how you're able to create such a tasteful style of realism. The simplicity of it all is what never fails to capture my attention. I find that your composition is very elegant and modern. I have never seen anything like your work before. However, this brings my critique. I beleive that you should try something completely different. Whether it be in media, application, or size. Something you haven't dabbled in! Your work is breathtaking! I love your style! I hope to see more in the future!

The painting, masterfully done, exploits an interesting feeling: art is a beautiful thing, but delving into it to the point where you depend on it to free your mind and turn it into your only purpose in life will get you addicted to it, and when it's taken away from you, you're left empty and purposeless.
What I love about this one is how the different techniques blend with each other. The crisp lines from the face are transposed somehow in the "threads" from the smoke, that form the skeleton of a blurry, chaotic cloud.

One suggestion would be to do something with the background too. It being white does emphasise the main element, but I feel that it would be more appropriate to add something to the background too, because the whimsical, entropic smoke doesn't need too much attention to be valuable.

All in all, a powerful painting, worthy of a favourite and a trip to the author's page e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>

What an inspired and impressive piece. I myself would wilfully kill to have the kind of talent that makes works like this one possible. The use of colour to create texture, blending out from skin and hair to something that looks like a burst of multicoloured smoke trapped in a jar of water, the concept, the detail and the general presentation leave me completely spellbound. This is one of the most singularly impressive pieces I have seen on deviantART in a long time, and I've seen a LOT. Concept art is one of the hardest ideas to deliver on canvas, but you have nailed it perfectly - for me at any rate - and the dA community needs a great deal more of this kind of thing. Absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. Well done.

This painting is so hauntingly beautiful, the slight hint of pain and agony, along with the beautiful color combinations. The details are very well done, i personally like using different kinds of colors in the skins of human portraits. It brings a kind of surreal effect to the paintings.
I have to point out the eyes: the shading and color combinations make the eye almost look real. Very well done.
The one thing, is i might have liked her shoulders and bust, unlike my usual style of doing just the head like this one, i think it might have made the painting more...human? But otherwise, its a beautiful piece. Very good.

Amazing work... very thought provoking. I love how you blended the media and combined pencil, pen, and two different types of paint. The colors are magnificent!!! You really captured the detail on her face and hair. I LOVE the technique you used with the watercolors - I'm still experimenting with those and I'll be using this for inspiration. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> The description you put is also excellent. Putting the darker colors near the bottom gives this "choking" effect... she may see the beautiful colors up top where her eyes are, but the damage is being done underneath, like you said, she's oblivious to what's really going on inside of her. Excellent piece!!!! You truly have amazing talent.

Every time I see one of your watercolor pieces, I'm just blown away. It's hard for me to type up a proper critique because I'm just so, so speechless.

I just can't even describe it. The colors are so brilliant and the technique used for the smoke is simply stunning. The drips and the splatter, to me, add a sense of...I want to say, chaos, or losing control. Reading the artist comments and looking back at this artwork, I do get the feeling that the girl behind the cloud is trapped. The work on her face is just simply gorgeous in itself, I love how there are some different [albiet faint] colors in her skin, and her hair and the way it drips down the page really adds to the piece.

I also really like your idea of art being similar to a drug. To some people, yes, it can be very addicting, but it's the most harmless addiction I can think of. And I know I treat art as somewhat therapeutic, and I do see what you mean by, "not being able to do anything else," because sometimes art is all you really know, if you do it enough times.

and that's my best critique.

This thing called art, is stupendously amazing.

I love the flow of the dark-blue hues, to the vast colour patterns as, I would assume, smoke, rises. It gives this evolutionary feel or transcendence of sadness, to hope.

As my eyes follow the colour, there pops this face! It's interesting. The character seems to be looking down or at us. The tongue also emits the smokey colours, suggesting she breathes art.

The title is also very intriguing. "This thing called art is really dangerous". By looking at the picture one more time, the smokey colours make me refer to fire! The character is metaphorically 'burning' in her own flames of art! And amazing vision, and thought, I would say.

In the end, I would like to congratulate you for this amazing work. It makes me think of the impacts of art, and how it can show disaster, and also beauty.

This painting brings me to a hookah bar, you're sitting there with friends talking and having a blast, you take a hit of that fruitiest tasting tobacco and you want to enjoy it for as long as you can so you slowly exhale.

i'm a huge fan of watercolor and you have a magnificent talent for it. this painting is pleasant to look at the colors contrast perfectly, and that what drew me in, i don't know how you did it but the smoke looks like the top part is the nice things people get out of smoking but the lower part is the harmful and horrible things out of smoking. It's all around fantastic

Your paintings are an inspiration as well as an AWESOME piece of art. There are a couple of things that might add to the picture, like maybe if her expression showed some fear in it, like if she knew what was happening but couldn't do anything about it. Another thing is that the strand of hair on her face is there but does not add anything to the picture. If it weren't there, you could better see the rest of the painting without an interference. The bottom of the cloud reminds me of ink and the top is likewise beautiful. Great technique! I love how it drips down at the bottom. It adds quality to the painting if you know what I mean. I am inspired by your never ending beautiful skill. NEVER LOSE IT!!!

B-E-A-U-tiful. This piece of work gives an instant visual impact, the explosion of colour just drew me in straight away. The great thing about colour within art is that it can tell us things such as the current mood. Looking at this, there are several deep and gripping moods all combined together, inside of an immaterial void of unknown. To me it is the subject's personality bleeding out onto the page; a heavy mixture of pain, warmth, darkness and danger which has all lead up to comfort, confidence and safety. It almost tells a story of a person's colourful past and present, and when art does this, it is a joy to admire and lose ourselves in.

Good luck in your future work!

As always, your work is striking and creative! However, it looks like something you struggled with, this time. The expression is a bit bland and emotionless and it detracts from the over all peice for me. The way you layer color and detail into the face is beautiful, but that eye seems a bit dead to me this time. If I had a cloud of art coming out of my mouth, I'd feel something, and I imagine that would reflect in my expression. That one line of red hair across her face also detracts, to me. It's cutting her in half visually, presenting two different side to her face where there were already two visually seperate entities. There's the viewer left of her face, the viewer right of her face, and the art cloud. The art cloud is extremely well done. the texture and color is interesting and has great depth and motion. that being said, it's still a pretty strong piece in it's own right, and highly original.
