I've always found white to be a much more distressing color than black . . . perhaps it's the common assumption that white=good and black=evil or happy->sad . . . I find that white, when used properly can create a much more intense mood and is can be ever more unsettling because it can not only properly convey such a mood but it's contradiction of accepted meaning makes for a more powerful piece.
This piece has absolutely captured, for me, that exact balance required. The white makes the sadness or longing I see in the eyes all that much more intense. The use of moths/butterflies also fits right in with my perception of the mood this piece casts. They are white (but also black) and typically associated with happiness and springtime but these steal the voice from your subject! I'd say this would be a piece I would proudly hang on my wall but to be honest it speaks so strongly that I think I'd have trouble ever looking at anything else!
Thank you for creating this striking image which, I'm sure, will stay in my mind for quite some time!

The composition works well. Also, the way that you painted the butterflies in the same painterly style of the face is well done, since it stops them from turning into the cheesy imagery they can easily become. Overall good job!
