Star Wars “fans” try not to attack the Sequels challenge (impossible!).
This meme was inspired by braindead YouTube comments on an official Dune: Part Two promotional video, where they had to needlessly say that the video is better than the Sequel Trilogy – with some of the replies even denying the trilogy’s existence. I adore both Star Wars and Dune, yet you have some easily triggered “fans” whose lack of self-awareness made them blind to their double standards. They praised Dune: Part Two for subverting expectations about everything – the protagonist, the outcome, the message – yet consistently bash the Sequel Trilogy, especially The Last Jedi, for doing the same. The meme pretty much self-explains the hypocrisy: they praised Paul Atreides (and Anakin, too) and yet condemned Luke’s characterization in The Last Jedi for the same reasons.
If Dune: Part Two was a Star Wars movie (and Frank Herbert’s novel profoundly influenced George Lucas), with Paul being Luke, they would’ve despised it! Interestingly, many refrained from labelling this movie as “woke”, perhaps because of its undeniable success. This success, in fact, contradicts their “Go woke, go broke!” mantra, forcing them to avoid looking foolish (even though they already do to any sensible human being). I am sure they have strokes whenever Zendaya/Chani is presented as a strong, independent female leader who saw through Paul and the Bene Gesserit’s BS. They’d secretly condemn her as a “Mary Sue” or the “New Rey” under their smelly, Cheetos-scented breaths.
I know that Anakin would probably be a better parallel to Paul, but Luke was the one erroneously treated by the Star Wars fandom as the infallible saviour who succeeded where his father failed. Frank Herbert wrote Dune as a warning against treating fallible heroes as perfect, and I’m glad that Star Wars applied this understanding with characters like Anakin and Luke.
I’m disabling the comments to prevent these same insufferable trolls from inevitably brigading and repeating their accusations ten times fast.
