Bear in mind most of my job is 3D modeling etc. and not concept art. Concept art is wayyyy harder to get into than 3D. 3D is my fallback career, and my fallback fallback career is marketing (lol), but fortunately 3D puts me in a great place to get the art jobs when they show up

Hey there~ *tigermoph told me you got a job in character development, which is what I'm aiming to do after I finish my Digital Design course. He recommended I should talk to you for some advice or something. I also looked through your gallery and saw some good stuff. I'm just glad to know someone in NZ who was successful in finding a job in that line

Well, I'm in character development when the job requires it. Basically the nature of the NZ industry is that unless you're at Weta you'll need to do more than just that - at work I also do 3D modeling, zBrush, set layout, storyboards and the occasional matte painting. You therefore have to be versatile unless you're so uber you don't need to worry about it
Looking at your work, the main thing you need to do is life drawing. Lots and lots and lots of life drawing.

Unfortunately, all this has to coincide with this anime fangirl of mine who wants to draw in that style and make money from it hopefully.
Life drawing has helped me improve how I draw people now. Ohh~ if only you could see what I've done after a few months of life drawing - but I never seem to have the time to finish the pictures to put on DA. The closest I have is the Delphine one on my front page.
And I want to be versatile - I came to understand that when I talked to a retired film director. I don't plan to work at Weta though, some part of me tells me this. But, I'll have to wait and see, I am in my first year.

Zero interest student loan, and it's about 10k NZD (7k US?) per year including food and accom. Heavily government subsidised
Loving it. The art director from the studio onsite is coming on Monday to see my work too, just found out. Didn't even have to ask. Honestly I could not be happier with this place.

Thought I'd reply here before a mod gets upset about derailing the thread. 
No kidding, it seems like all the job openings I can find require working knowledge of Maya and/or Zbrush... >_< Zbrush is fun but difficult to master, and Maya's just out of my league right now. I have so much to learn.
Haha, I have the same problem with female characters, and for the same reasons I might assume. All the females in my portfolio are androids of some kind. XD Definitely one thing I'm going to have to get down at some point.
You got any leads for work after you graduate? I wouldn't think NZ has that much in the way of gaming studios...though then again I would just about kill to work at Weta Digital.
