Oh wow, it's perfect! And that flying ocelot, and Cthulhu spawn, and the kangaroo-rat pangolin....!
Thanks so much, this is exactly the infusion of craziness I needed right now.
How the hell have you been, Rob? How's this apocalypse working out for you? : p

Honestly, apocalypse is not too bad so far. Baring any imminent economic collapse. Since i work from home anyway, not a huge lifestyle change, except that Adriane and the kids are home too now. So, 2 jobs and home schooling and maximum device deployment. Being an introvert anyway is a big help. More worried about my folks, since they're higher risk. But they've been keeping safe.
How 'bout you? Losing your mind or hanging in there?

OH man, kinda both...? My sister is at the epicenter of the initial Seattle outbreak and works in an organ and tissue donation center, so she sent my niece down here to stay with us for the duration. Kudos to you for homeschooling the kids--I should be doing more educational stuff with Emily. I think she's practically got a degree in virtual restaurant management from Roblox University at this point, though. : p
Saw some sad news this morning that made me think of you, btw--remember Pok Pok, that place on Division where you got the weird chicken and declined to eat salted boar collar? They finally closed down the other day after their chef died of covid. : (

I totally remember Pok pok and the weird chicken, and a nice cocktail, and dragging you up and down the block a bunch while i missed my paige! That's awful news about the chef. No more salted boar collar for Portland. heart goes out to everyone working working there now out of work.
Very cool of you to host Emily. Yeah, get her out of that high-risk epicenter. Maybe she could use a lesson in animal anatomy? I actually cracked open Goldfinger's Animal Anatomy for Artists the other day w/ Ethan. He did a very fine Squirrel. Alex, left to his devices is somewhat self-educating, and will happily research ancient empires of his own accord. Ethan, on the other hand, will happily memorize his Yu-gi-oh cards all day long. Poor Alex, though; we've realized he's kind of a shy extrovert in a family of bold introverts. He needs social time more than the rest of us.
If the weather is as fine this weekend as it is now, hoping we can all do a serious hike. If not... more board game indoctrination! Have been loving this one lately; www.kickstarter.com/projects/w…
Good to hear that you and your family are well, though. Hope it stays that way! We will get through this beshitted fuckfest.

Haha, oh man, that's right, the missed page! XD To be fair that was a pretty busy and chaotic scene on Division....Man, I just remember you guys being here during that absolutely miserable period with the heat and the (mostly unrelated) smoke from the forest fires, and feeling really bad you weren't seeing the area under more pleasant circumstances. But then again, at least it wasn't raining. XP
I think Emily is in almost exactly the opposite predicament to (your) Alex, in fact--she's an extrovert in a family of introverts...On the bright side, this shelter-in-place biz really hasn't had much of an impact on my lifestyle since I rarely go out anyway. The one thing that's really bumming me out is not being able to swim--I had gotten back into that recently and was making steady progress, so it's kind of discouraging having to abruptly give it up. How are you doing with that aspect--do they have online karate classes...? D :
Haha, that Heavy Hitters looks pretty cool! I like the surface treatment, I've always gotten a kick out of "sporty" paint schemes, sponsorship decals etc. on mechs.

The plus side of having prowled Division a bunch is that i got to see that very cool food truck lollapolooza. Because of said heat, we really didn't explore quite as much of Portland as we might have -though we did do the Zoo, Botanical garden, Hawethorne bridge, Mt. Tabor, comic sore, some local haunts, and somehow tree-lined central city suburbs (where i would love to move if i wasn't so chickenshit about leaving East coast). Canon beach and numerous waterfall hikes kept us cool enough. Your advice about where to go and what to do was enormously helpful! The beautiful hikes were especially mind blowing. Thank you for all of that!
It's funny i was hearing someone last week lamenting their swimming withdrawal. That's a damn fine hobby though. Swimming. We're lucky enough to have an awesome neighbor who gives us total pool access in the warm seasons. Probably that'll start later than usual this year!
And actually, i was e-mailing my sensei just now about organizing online class schedule. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some folks don't want to pay at all while dojo doors are closed. But the poor guy still has to keep the school afloat, you know? The landlord still wants the rent paid. This is the type of shit i'll have to worry about if i ever buy the business from him some day! (which is not impossible, but a whole nother conversation. Martial Arts is one thing. Dealing with cranky student and parents is another).
I'm used to maintaining some practice outside of class anyway, so it's not too weird for me yet. Weirder for my neighbors who have to see a mid-life crisis play out in the adjacent driveway - in the shape of me wielding a curtain rod, standing-in for an actual Bo staff.
Good call on GKR's looks; the bright primary color corporate livery is one of the reasons it looks so damn good on the table. The other is that it's weta workshop; and everything is head to toe gorgeous, from the mech sculpts to the card artwork. It's a masterclass of design and illustration. I like to pretend i'm learning things from it to help justify the cost $$. But they really went bananas w/ the mech anatomy. Only barely anthropomorphic. Much different approach from my usual. Much closer to yours, actually -If your organics were converted to mecha. Very "Let's put this extra limb here now".
i will say (and then stop droning) that this new physical-media-based hobby of mine is perfect for cutting down on excessive screen time (post workday), and spending more weekend time w/ the boys, especially in lieu of their enforced social exile ATM.

Just the flu, so it’s nothing bad... was just a bit frustrating because those were my only two weeks off before school ends for good in July
Sorry to hear that! From my perspective, it does not appear as a step backwards or as it being more cartoony. I see it more as a focus on scenes and maybe even narrative rather than just isolated concepts, which is not something I see as a negative – it’s just a new or newer development.
And after all, art is all about development and movement. I reckon it is always good to try new things and let ones art take itself to new areas it goes on its own... without that, there would just be stagnation and there would not be any real progress or improvement.
So I definitely think you should stay on the course you have set for yourself, especially if there is a reason why you set off on that course. Keeping at it is probably the best way to get through this rough patch but I reckon it is also important to not overdo it or obsess about it (which is something that I myself have to learn not to do as well) because if it comes from a place where you are happy and satisfied with yourself and your work, it will show in your art and you’ll enjoy working on it more.
Besides that, I just think it is sometimes difficult to see one’s own improvements and people tend to be hard on themselves... Because I can see improvements in our art which has never been lacking anyways. Your sense of size, perspective and detail especially are elements that I find really amazing and impressive about your newer works. Your linework also seems more secure as well
Thank you very much, that means a lot coming from you! (I actually used to look at your art even before I joined DA myself)
And don’t worry about it, I understand that sentiment! If you feel it would influence your own creative process in a way you don’t want to, then I completely understand you not wanting to interact too closely with it. Either way, I am happy just knowing you enjoy my art and I hope I can keep on improving and bring you more cool concepts

I'm taking a deeper look through your gallery and wow! Your creatures are both visually arresting in design and so thoroughly thought out/researched/created from a deep knowledge base that it is at once inspiring and intimidating. Truly a joy to look through and learn from
