I was interested in your question since i too assumed the missing children were killed (because of all the talk about mass graves hidden in the school and the bizarre shadow cat that lurks around in ep1 and ep2), but after ep4 i rethought the whole thing .. the monk could have very easily killed them right there for breaking the rules (heck the kid in the stone rolling sport disappeared for something trivial compared to what they uncovered), yet he didn't .. we was actually suffering and in pain yet he did everything he could to keep them alive and protect them from the wild Queerats.

At that point i realized there is much more hidden purpose to pretty much everything we saw so far, in short .. it's just the very tip of the iceberg XD

No problem, and yeah i know what you mean about ep8 .. .. i haven't seen it yet but got a glimpse of its premise from anime blogs .. i kinda saw a sexuality focused part of the story coming since the mentioned the sexual conditioning to have a community that lowers stress through sexual interaction like monkeys but i didn't expect them to dive head-on into it this early .. actually ever since i got a glimpse of the scene between Saki and Satoru inside the cage in one of the early previews (before the show aired) i knew sexuality is going to play a role in the story despite the fact that it seemed like a show about a bunch of children going on some fantastical adventure .. turns out it's not like that at all .. i just didn't expect them to tackle the sexuality issues this early XD
