Not really 'into' it as much as I would want to be. What is this project anyway?

That's a shame man, I took a year off doing it which hurt my progress badly... I've been doing it for about 5months again now. Making sick progress, maybe because I'm older. Moar testosterone lol.
As for the project I bought two domains the other day on a whim really... Seriouslysupplements.com and .co.uk and based on that I really wanted to try and set up a store on magento and hand pick certain supplements as a start off point. With a big focus on the quality "serious about supplements" and have a high range, medium range and low range based on price, effectiveness and how advanced the trainee is.
Another cool feature I was hoping to integrate was some sort of voting system which in itself effects where the supplement ends up... High, med, low.
I don't particularly want to take the project on all by myself either as the developer, designer or just general site manager. So of course I thought I'd let you know since I remembered you was into it a while back.
If your interested let me know man... Even if your too busy now we can get this going a few months down the line.

Whats the purpose of the site? Not another one of those sites with muscly guys saying like 'I changed from this to this in 3 weeks' is it? haha.

Noooo.
Those sites are terrible and I could code that in about 20 minutes lol.
The purpose of this site from a business perspective is to sell supplements...
From a development perspective it is to provide a platform for weekend warriors/bodybuilders/athletes to come and interact with a naturally evolving/scalable web application... Of course the design would need to reflect that...
Also providing the best supplements is going to be a big part of the site...
Will most likely keep a forum on the site as well just to keep a community going. I've been going to t-nation for years and their forum members spend hundreds of thousands on the sites supplements every year.
What I want to do is create something amazing. The design would need to be excellent and very well thought out, the code would be fairly easy to deal with I think, not 100% sure about coding for magento yet but I'll figure that out along the way. Assuming the magento route is the best route...
I'm completely open to ideas though, but generally the site needs to be unique... I don't see the point trying to compete with some of the big sites that sell hundreds of different supplements. Stock a select few that are proven to work and provide a platform that is better than just adding a review in a form and I think people will use it. When I say better, I mean a lot better.
I'm extremely ambitious when it comes to any project... Social networking wasn't what it was today until people decided to make it better than it was. Who knows what supplement sites could be in a few years... Frankly man we are the sort of people who create that change. It's a growing trend, loads of guys are doing weights now and going to the gym...
Don't tell me you couldn't come up with some badass ideas for this

Congrats on tfbox dude. Lookin' sweet.
When did you become all pro-coder-like?

osec In reply to Laurie-J [2011-06-10 19:10:54 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, although tfbox I shan't be continuing. I'm instead going to create a designer/developer network. Sort of like forrst/dribbble but I will make it heaps heaps better. With any luck!
Coding wise, been at it non-stop for the past year and a half? Something like that.
Appreciate that, thanks.

Just out of interest what languages do you use?
Personally my biggest strength is and always will be (probably) CSS because of the design background.
Do you still live in Exeter man?
Because you remember I live in Okehampton right?
Well the whole of Devon apart from maybe 2 agencies / companies that I have found absolutely suck design wise. Even the coders are awful.
If you want to, between us we could probably very easily work together and get a lot of local work.

I thought you lived in Exeter, yeah I still live here haha.

Yeah I made all that, though I've recently abandoned it as I'll be making something much, much bigger though it will take a good while for me to build.
What you up to these days?

Just chilling out and taking it easy lol
I'm going to make a career out of web design, spent years doing stuff in photoshop and I always knew HTML,CSS. Never thought of putting the two together and actually doing something that is a lot of fun and could eventually make me a lot of money.
Only problem I have right now is trying to get to grips with actual web design in photoshop. I can whip up a great site using just CSS3 but once I go into photoshop everything looks awful lol I think it's down to colour theory and stuff like that, just a bit of a learning curve really.
Putting a portfolio together but I can't really decide on what sort of layout I want for the design... Almost definitely integrating wordpress but I've never designed a site for WP before so that's going to be fun.
After that I want to start a little team and have it run as an online company using basecamp probably. Maybe 4 or 5 guys, inspired from years of loving small teams in CoD lol.
What's this new site you're making?

Oh cool man. I'm good with HTML and CSS getting there with jQuery.
Don't know if I will bother with php yet.
More interested in front-end development.
The Finished Box is your site right?
Looks great man, I assume you coded it all yourself too?

also, do you like forums? Have you heard of encide.net? Surely enzu has told you about it.. I'd totally love to get you on there. And I'm sure there are people there that could help you.
It's cool if you don't. I just think it'd be cool to find out what you're up to, and you'd get some pretty great critiques from pretty great designers.

Ah, awesome man. Hope it works out for you. I want an invite when you get it off the ground
What's going to happen to tfbox? Have you thought about selling it? Even just the development you've done for it..
It's quite a transition dude. I remember when you knew nothing about coding, now you're way ahead of me. A bit jealous really haha.
I wish I had your confidence. You're one of those guys that do, aren't you? I look forward to seeing what you do next

Invite me! How dare nigel not tell me about this, I'll be sure to beat his ass later.
Haha I wouldn't say I'm the most confident guy in the world, I may be confident with what I do on the web, but I'm quite shy in reality.
I doubt I'll sell it, I may carry on with it in about 7-8 months. Considering I think that's how long it will take me to get the skills to do some extreme back-end coding and build this new thing haha.

Hello Daryl
I was browsing and I noticed you have a great gallery for webdesigns.
well.. to be straight, my brother is re-designing his portfolio and he needs some outside thoughts about his design.
If it's not too much to ask, can you give your thoughts to the design. Which design is better among the three?
You can also include your reason for choosing it..
Critiques, comments, corrections and feedbacks are very much appreciated.
Here are 3 versions of the concept:

For sure go with version 2.1. Seems to me the most professional of the 3. Design wise there isn't much if anything at all you should change about it. Everything about it appears to do as it should.
