Last Chance The gentleman sat at his deep mahogany desk, surrounded by rolls and small piles of paper. Thick tomes stuffed shelves all about him. A large map of England was tacked to the wall, with a few pins placed on cities all over the island. Tall windows let in slanted, dusty light to illuminate the young woman dressed as a maid, standing in front of the desk with the seated gentleman. He reached for a pair of pince-nez and dropped them on his nose, then nonchalantly took a sheaf of paper that held a heavy red wax seal at the bottom. The gentleman glanced occasionally at the young woman while he read the paper. Finally, he set the leaf to the side atop a pile, and removed his glasses, setting them off to the opposite side on the desk. Leaning back in his black, worn leather chair, he sighed at the young woman, who had an air of awkward nervousness about her. She fidgeted slightly as she saw his expression.
Distant MemoriesThis was told to me by a friend who was a teacher at an elementary school in the country.
“Did you ever see someone and know that they would be destined for trouble? I had that eerie feeling many years ago with a young boy. He had just come into the school system, 1st grade. He was quiet, didn’t cause trouble. Got picked on a lot by the other kids, because he was new. This kid never really made friends. There were stories over the years that the kid’s parents would abuse him or beat him, but he never showed the signs, that I could see. I didn’t teach him, but I saw him around the school, because, you know, it’s a small school district. There was me and another teacher, we split the class in half and he was in Janet Biegel’s class. I forget his name, as I didn’t have him, naturally, and age has taken its toll on my memory.”

Forceress Maudlin struggled against her bonds on the table, clenching her fists near her head. She looked around the room for anything that could tell her where she was, or who her captor was, but all she saw was the dim light of a few oil lanterns casting their orange-yellow glow onto strange items and features. The heavy wooden table was starting to make her back and hips ache. Even without the light, Maudlin smelled the tang of copper and iron that indicated whatever happened down here, it got bloody at times. As she attempted to roll and strain the ropes at her wrists to try and break free, she could feel a slight pull on her deep red, hooded cloak when she moved. Normally she would be talking to herself out loud about her situation, but for some reason, Maudlin decided an internal monologue would be best here.
Ugh, this table… I don’t know what’s happened on it, but I bet it’s never been cleaned. It’s sticky with so ! Stay tuned for more from two of these storylines!
