Are you referring to my Photoshop coloring or marker work on my sketch cards?

Heh, both truly. But last night I was motivated by the sketch cards.

Did you get my e-mail on marker coloring a week ago or so? I didn't hear back, so I'm not sure if you got it or not?

I got it, Thanks man! I just have been totally sucking at being a decent reliable online person lately. I'm kinda in my phase where I ignore my e-mails and don't draw anything, its a horrible cycle I've gotten into lately.
But thanks man, I now am one step closer to stealing your genius

Ha! No genius here.
Sorry about the cycle you are in. Been there. Done that. And that thing called life loves to step in and suck up any creative energy you may have had. Sometimes you just have to grab one of your old sketchbooks and just start with some scribbles and doodles to get going again.

Let's do it. How do you want to handle it? E-mail or phone call?

PatrickHSullivan In reply to mmunshaw [2011-08-31 03:53:12 +0000 UTC]
E-mail would rock, since I tend to need to go back and re-read instructions after I have tried them. I'm afraid I wouldn't soak in all the goodness on a phone call. My e-mail is essentially my user name plus @yahoo.com. Thanks a ton for offering this

Thanks Bill. Glad you like the group image/logo. My output is going to slow down just like everyone else's with the holidays here.

Thanks for the watch. I was looking through your gallery and thought that wasp peice looked familiar, it finally clicked that it was from the wall at the House of Pop Culture. I did the House logo for Brett down there. He's a good guy. I might run into you there sometime.

It was Brett who told me about you today. Turns out we are working on the same project. I am doing sketch cards for The Pro also. I e-mailed Brett asking if he had a copy of it so I could use it for reference. He asked if I was doing some trading card art for it, because a friend of his, Bill McKay was. It's a small world.

Brett had a copy of the Pro but I bought it from him 2 weeks ago when Steve at 5finity told me about the project. I had never read it but I wanted to work on the cards. I just finished my first set of sketch cards. I did 40 Zombies vs Cheerleaders cards. I had never done them until 3 weeks ago but after doing 2 a day for 20 days I've become better at it. I'm looking forward to seeing your cards. Good luck on those.
Did you know Pat Carlucci? He lived in the area. He was the reason I found out about 5finity.
Take it easy!

Pat lived just a couple miles from me. We talked via e-mail, but never met. I know two of his brothers fairly well. We all worked together at a local printer. It's very sad about his passing.
I've done a couple of projects with Steve, March of Dimes and Archie. I still haven't figured out these sketch cards. I'll do one and love it. Thinking I've finally hit my stride. And then the next one will be "what the f@#$, that's horrible".
What media do you use? The samples you have posted look like colored pencil.

BillMcKay In reply to mmunshaw [2010-04-09 19:35:07 +0000 UTC]
I used colored pencils for flesh tones only because the card stock won't hold ink well. It bleeds. I can't find a marker light enough for cacusasion complexion. I use a yellow, pink and brown pencil on skin. The rest are Prisma colors and colored Sharpies then touched up with Pigment liners. Not the best tools but they are the ones I have.
Even after doing 40 cards I can look at them one minute and think they kick ass and then later think they suck. But thats a sickness I have about everything I do. I am never happy with my inks, every line has to be perfect but it's impossible with the sketch cards because of the card quality so I just try to do my best.
I think the world got a little bigger when Pat passed.

I received my cards yesterday. I'm going to try a couple of different medias this weekend. I will let you know what works for me. I'm concerned now that you said the quality of the cards doesn't hold ink well. I like to ink the piece after the coloring.
I bought a Prismacolor marker of Brick Beige (PM-78) awhile back and I love the color it gives me for flesh tones.
Have you or did you have any luck selling your Return Cards?

BillMcKay In reply to mmunshaw [2010-04-11 21:44:23 +0000 UTC]
I have done 2 of my Pro cards and I think the paper quality is better than the ZvC ones. I think the 2 Pro cards I did are the best ones I've done because of that. I always ink last also and there is a lot less bleed.
I just turned in my first set of sketch cards, so I never have had a chance to sell any yet. I would like to make a couple bucks if possible but I really wanted to do them to get my name out there and to see if it led to something else. I need as much exposure as I can get. I'm pretty much unknown. I know Pat was selling his cards for good money but he was very well known. If I do sell any I'll let you know.

I did two over the weekend too. The black ink holds really well. I'm happy about that. But I need to figure out a better way to do the coloring. The prismacolor markers are coming out way to bright and dense. I'm going to dry watercolor pencils tonight.

I just try not to use dark colors. I have to use Purple for the Pro's cape but I use a lot of pastel type colors. I use lots of yellow, pink, sky blue, tan, and light gray, for my markers. I found a light green sharpie and did a card of The Viewer that I think came out good. I tried to avoid green before because it always came out to heavy. I found some sharpies in pastel colors at AC Moore in Waldorf. The pink one is a very helpful heavy red alternative. I was about halfway through my ZvC cards when I found that marker and it changed my whole approach.
