Hey there. I am working at the mngp doing 12's. Been way to tired to do anything lately. Though I should be able to finish my steak anvil in time for it to be sent down to the memphis metal museaum. Going to be a lot of work. I still have to finish welding the round horn and make it round. I am so tired. I have had a migrane for like 9 weeks now. Oh man so much to do and so little energy. Hope your having fun. I loved the crow/blackbird that you made.

Lol yes that would be. How old were you when you started blacksmithing? How many years have you been working as a smith? Well it has definitely taught you that metal is hot lol.

Ok. Thank you very much then! Yeah, i don't know if I'm going to like having competition in my age group when i go away to school for artist blacksmith certificate.

20 or 21 somewhere in abouts those ages. So like 8 years I guess now? maybee? I really don't know Yes though I still have to be reminded of it from time to time.

Your welcome. Well I hope you enjoy yourself. I am sure there will be plenty of fun toys to use at least and plenty of people to learn from. Enjoy it and make full use of the tools at your disposale. Hopefully it will be an easier road.

ipneto In reply to MikailaD21 [2013-01-28 04:15:16 +0000 UTC]

lol. It just takes a little instruction of which I seem to always have to give those I work with. Not many work with muscle power that much. We will brake you of that habit if you come to forge Its a whole different learning experiance especially when your directing instead of swinging but there is plenty to learn on both sides of the anvil.

MikailaD21 In reply to ipneto [2013-01-28 18:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Well i dunno about that. I'm skinny as it is. That's true. I never thought of that. I could always borrow someone as an assistant if i need muscle power when i get my own forge together. Thanks

ipneto In reply to MikailaD21 [2013-01-29 13:40:39 +0000 UTC]

You should see how skinny I was before I was able to get into this. It helps when your making your own tools to have the help. oh and some things you might find interesting.

Well i still think i have a lot more work to do than you did when you started. I was the fastest female cross country runner in high school and was fast at long distance in track and field as well. yeah, I'm hoping my smith friend will teach me how to make various tongs over the summer.

I know some of those, anvilfire, iforgeiron and ABANA. Thank you More stuff to study is always good.

Did you learn how to make your own iron ingots?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ipneto In reply to MikailaD21 [2013-02-06 07:10:43 +0000 UTC]

lol. The endurance is the important part. Sounds like you have that kind of muscle already built up. Tongs ar simple there are some nice videos from Brian Brazeal up on the web deffinatly worth the watch.

Your welcome.

What do you mean by iron ingots? I have been a part of a cast iron pour and I have also helped run an aristotal furnace. I have some peices of it to try and consolidate for something small. Its a complicated subject I don't know enough about. But am learning more and more each day. Don't know if you've seen the [link]

MikailaD21 In reply to ipneto [2013-02-07 18:14:28 +0000 UTC]

But running only builds up your lungs/heart legs and abs. How does that help? Ok. I like learning by seeing so I'll definitely check them out later.

Taking iron ore and putting it in a furnace to remove the impurities out of it. Isn't that a ingot? Cool! Lucky. I hope to learn it some day as well.

Yaaay videos! Thank you. I'll bookmark those for later studying. The viking axe one is really cool.

Oh trust a man that has sports induced asma and does this...It helps. When working you are using your whole body. Keep that in mind. I noticed in your pictures your leaning way down to get your face near your work. Try to break that habbit. Get your hip in close to the anvil and just let the hammer fall. A rectangular handle with opposing corners removed will help with this and alow you to hold it with little stress on your body and a two fingered grip (thumb and pointer). leaning over like that will only hurt your back. Most smiths arn't big burly muscular men. Its about endurance more than power. You're better off using a micanical means to get the power. Less stress on your body less aches and pains as you get older. The first book I would recomend you get and I know its expensive is the Mark Aspery's first book. I think I gave you the link..deffinatly well worth it. Especialy for a beginner. It deals with the ergonomics of proper hand forging pretty well in the first chapter.

Well depending on the actuall process it would be called a bloom at that point or a batch, pour, fluff. Ingot isn't used in that reference that much. There is a knife forum that has an area that deals with the particulars of that. [link]

Yeah its a pretty neat one. Top tools are really handy to have.

MikailaD21 In reply to ipneto [2013-02-11 23:13:25 +0000 UTC]

Ok ok i believe you now. Yeah its partially a bad habit, i can't see it very well. The hammer handles don't fit my hands well in general though. I think. Also in that picture I'm so low because my anvil isn't quite high enough and I'm working at the edge finishing off a ball furnishing if that effects it at all. Yeah, i can't afford a power hammer yet and assistants are free.
.....I don't think i got that link. Wow its really expensive on amazon. It can't be that old.... Thank you . My boss can only teach me so much. The rest i have to learn by carefully watching him more or elsewhere.

That's what its called. Bloom. Ok, i see it. Thanks

Its a really good idea inserting a tool steel piece (or so) where the cutting edge is. Its hard to find tool steel of that size if you were to use all of it for the axe.
