You want to get better at illustration? Draw every single day. Every day, even if it is only for twenty minutes. Draw like you have to. If your soul is in it, you will already feel like you need to. Practice drawing things from life, even when it looks hideous. Take care to analyze sizes, the distance between shapes, the space within, the negative space, and perspectives. Get a book on perspective. Read about judging space and negative space. Give regard to colors: not the color you think you see, but the actual colors within the color. You look at the flatscreen television when it is off, and you think you see black, but you are actually seeing all of the colors that create black, the blues, the purples, and all of the colors and highlights that make up the reflection bouncing off of the tv, the yellows, greens, pinks, purples, the red glare from the light that signifies the television is off. See how the light expands, like a star, when you look at it. See how that corner of the screen is tinted red. Do you see the cracks in the tv where panels are put together? Those are darker. Do you see the difference in plastics? Do you see the shadow behind the tv, overlapping the cords that come down along the wall? Do you understand the sizes of the cords compared to the size of the tv? The cords fall naturally in curves and coils. Learn to draw the straightest lines and the smoothest curves. Trust me when I say, f you can draw a straight line and a smooth curve, you can draw anything.
