hehe you have to love drawing.
You and only you are the one whom to find motivation in.
Then you have to love your subject(s). vehicles ? animals ? landscapes ? buildings ? cellphones ?

I started copying Dragonball pictures, basketball actions and portraits and sport shoes when I was a teenager...
I started to create my own pictures 7 years after I really started drawing.
Then came creatures, graphic/technical designs...
Now unless mother natre came down to you, giving you stunning skills (and even in that case)
Practice is unavoidable.
Then it is just like writing !
Combined, simple shapes become letters, words, texts... and as you practice, you get comfortable with.
Writing reglary everyday at school made us all correct writers, with our own hand writing (more or less respectfull or original).
Drawing simply takes writing to another level. But it's still using a pen.
Train with simple shapes in the begining.
Respect those shapes (sizes, proportions, perspective...) as they are the skeleton of your design.
Enjoy yourself with some more challenging works sometimes.
References as pictures, photos and wood puppets become helpfull, but they'll never be as good as real models !
Don't be mad at yourself when it looks like shit. You're learning. And you'll never stop.
Each shits help you to learn much more than pearls !
Masterpiece comes once shits are away, or under control.

To me, "stop copying" ment "creating new things".
Though I "created" my first original dragon mixing anatomies of a horse, a camel, a lion, a dog, a bird, and a (fruit)bat.
I started creating indeed, but still copying.
Just playing with propotions.
I think it is always based on something !
Now that I trained for years drawing whatever I needed, I grew experienced enough to draw whatever I want !
(more or less easily 
But I will still use models and tons of references if I have to draw some more dragonball pictures.
As anytime I feel hard to draw a special expression on a face, I take a mirror to have a reference...
I'll just have much more ease now to copy or to "create" new pictures of dragonball myself
Practice being a key,
