If you think American Beauty was rubbish then I can tell you know movies without having to know what else you like (are you from Perth? Perth people seem to be unusually smart for some reason). I've always been surprised at how many people think AB is a great film.
Sorry to say I still have to watch the LOTR series (I have all the movies). I tried to watch the fist one and the first 15 minutes or so kind of dragged (there was some slimy creature in the scenes). Since so many people liked the series I have resolved to try and watch them again soon.
In AB there was one part of music I liked. It was the scene with the bag blowing in the wind lol. I used the music in that part for a video of autumn I made lol.

AB was NOT a great film. it is seriously crap.
And the end was the stupidest thing.
well, i'll admit, LOTR drags a lot.
But you learn which bits are very good, and which ones aren't.
the whole 3rd movie is just amazing.
the first two are just like, ohh... that's cool...
you should deff watch them
there were some good lines in AB
like, where he's talking about the end, and he's like "blah blah blah and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life."

Your Dad being from Perth is probably good enough of an influence. People from Perth seem kind of independent and strong thinkers. People from there often mention being "isolated" so maybe that brings the best out of them - or maybe the sharks lol. Seems like even the cities have sharks in AU.

Oh yes that is quite true. My problem is that I take most of my photos when I am out riding my bicycle. I make 20 and 50 mile trips over both roads and trails in the woods. Taking a big DSLR with a couple lenses would be a lot of weight and there would be a lot of bouncing the camera around. I have been using a Canon S3 but I broke it last week. Thanks.

haha i'm far too fond of this idea and am quite possibly willing a fuel crisis myself =] then i'd be able to go elsewhere in your nation. baby steps i guess.

Well there is a lot to see and do in NY and its easy to get around. Fortunately you probably like museums and NY is one of top 5 cities for those - and they are cheap if your a student (it's hotels that are expensive - especially holiday week - but I assume you wont be in one of those). Of course there are always shows and gigs going on each day of the week.
All indications are that its going to be quite cold in Dec and Jan
so weather might be a factor. The parks are nice in the snow though and Manhattan is nice for holidays. Presently NY is full of tourists from around the world because of the exchange rate. I can walk a few blocks up fifth avenue and hear a half dozen languages along the way.
If you really wanted to knock yourself out Boston is a half day away by car and thats a great place. They have a population of 600,000 but they have 200,000 uni students during term. Washington DC is a day way by car. DC could be crazy in Jan though with new President coming in. We vote in a few weeks. Maybe I'll vote for you on a write-in ballot as long as your coming.
I think Dec and Jan are going to be pretty cold since it was cool summer and is cold enough to snow already as I type this.

i went with the get a map and put little marks everywhere where there's something of interest and then it doesn't even matter if i get lost there'll be something to pass time with.
the idea of a winter that is actually cold is amzing to me. and i think i might follow through with this boston idea.it seems a cool place.
