Hello! My name is Madison, I'm a born and raised Southern Californian (though to be honest I'd love to move somewhere more open, say Oregon, Colorado, etc). I have loved horses ever since I knew what they were and finally got my own in November of 2004. Zy has been with me ever since and has helped me grow as a rider, photographer, horse enthusiast and more. I photograph for fun, but am always looking to improve. Tips, comments, helpful critique, etc. are always welcome.If you have any questions about horses, birds (I'm no expert on either, but I am very passionate and love to research and expand my knowledge), my photographs, my stock, prints, photo-manipulations, or have any kind of request for stock, manips, etc. don't hesitate to note me or comment on an image :)

I'm not sure what you mean by expand...if you mean more diverse subjects then yes definitely; horses are just what I have the easiest access to (and as you can probably tell, I love them haha)

I do need to draw more...I have one that I started over a year ago and I still haven't finished it >.< (in the shading process)
The kicker for me is I don't have a scanner so I have to take a photo of it and upload the photo, which usually warps the drawing a little and you lose details. I've tried drawing with the tablet I got, but it's definitely not the same lol I can sketch and such with it, and draw in details over photographs (a signature, or in manipulations the eyes or hair, markings, etc) but as far as a whole horse goes it's tough! haha

Hmm...have you properly set up your tablet? I remember the first time I used a tablet six years ago, I really really hated it. It felt unnatural and it just felt like a gigantic laptop trackpad, and I avoided using one again until I bought my first one in 2010. If you set the tablet to pen mode and configure the tablet area to only use your monitor's proportions (which I didn't do the first time I used one), you should very, very quickly get used to it. To see if you've done it right, try drawing a perfect circle with your tablet right in the center and make sure it appears the same way on your monitor.
tl;dr have you configured the tablet correctly? That's what usually makes it feel awkward to use for some people.

I think I simply downloaded the programs and played around with it. It came with Coral Painter and Sketchpad, which are both great but feel weird trying to draw anything.
I'll have to take an afternoon and play around with settings.
Where do I start? Do I open one of those programs?

Corel Painter is pretty nice, and I haven't used Sketchpad. Photoshop and its free alternative, GIMP, are pretty good as well. But in my experience the best sketching programs are the ones from Japanese companies, e.g. PaintTool SAI: [link] . It's pretty cheap compared to other drawing programs, but there's also a cracked version floating around the internet. Pretty easy to set up the controls, too.
If you have a Wacom tablet, you can bring up its config menu on your computer (mine is Bamboo Preferences under All Programs), and under the Pen tab, there's a Tracking section that lets you choose between Pen and Mouse mode. Select the Pen mode, and tinker around with the Mapping settings by clicking on the Mapping button under it (e.g. Force Proportions under the Scaling area). Once you've got that set up, play around with your tablet under your sketch program of choice and see how it feels.
